    PS3 Killing my internet?

So im having this problem, I play FFXI on my pc, and usually throw a movie on my ps3 and watch it at the same time. Every single time that I turn on my ps3, or even change dvds (seems to happen whenever it hits the ps3 "dashboard" I d/c off ffxi (and the internet in general) for about a minute.

I have tried it on a wired connection ps3 and a wireless connection to ps3 and it happens both ways. It happens without fail EVERY time I put in a dvd or game on my ps3. Sometimes I get a wierd kinda d/c where I can see party chat but if I respond nobody sees it, that goes on for about a minute or so, then i finally get kicked off for "no response from server" on ffxi.

I know it doesnt even make sense, im a fairly technical person, but this is confusing the hell out of me. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Try turning off Upnp on your router, that's the only thing that I can think of.

Sounds like your router sucks. I used to experience a similar problem with my old linksys router. Apparently they have a nasty habit of keeping a HUGE history of half-open connections which floods the memory of the router. Then anytime a new connection needs to be made you get all sorts of lag on every system connected to the router. If it is the same problem, a good temp fix is daily memory flushes of the router. Just unplug it for a minute to clear it out.

Try turning off the media sharing.

If that doesn't work I had a sort of similar problem where it would lag all the other connections out, but not disconnect them, until it was all the way logged into the PS network. This was shortly after I got my PS3 (after Christmas the year they came out). I ended up having to put it in the DMZ. A while later I got a new router (similar model) and on a whim I tried it without and it was fine, I assume a firmware update for PS3 or the router fixed it.

I do use a linksys, but ive never had a problem with 360. IMO the 360 media sharing is better then ps3 anyway, maybe I will try turning that off on the ps3 and seeing if it makes a difference. I guess I can reset the router, but I believe that didnt change the issue last time, but its worth another shot in case im imagining things. Either way I gotta wait till I get off work to mess around with it, but at least now I have some direction. Thanks!

I almost guarantee this will fix your problem. UPnP is what causes all of these sort of issues.

I'm not sure if making a new post or posting here is the better idea, but I'll make it here, and if no replies, make another, I suppose. Sorry to hijack, but its related, and in the name of saving forum spam..

Have ATT DSL High Speed with a 2wire 'Gateway' (basically, a router+modem in one, phone line goes in, wireless signal goes out to computers) (2Wire 2701HG-B Gateway). It'll let me (and others) browse the internet, do whatever, and have absolutely no problems, so long as its low traffic. I can play games online etc, and generally have no issues..

When I play WoW, if I'm in a main city around primetime or somehow query the server for a large amount of data (/chatwho LFG channel, for example, or Dalaran around 6pm server, when most guilds raid) it will completely reset the router, putting me down for 2-5 minutes at a time; not so huge, if it didn't happen every time I tried to log back in for 30-60 minutes at a time. Eventually it will let me back in and stay connected even without moving out of the main city, and if I log onto a character somewhere obscure I don't disconnect, but otherwise, I have huge problems.

I've started noticing the problem with uTorrent as well; trying to download something, I come back, and its barely moved- I notice (through AIM) that I've been disconnecting all night, over and over and over. To clarify again, I'm not just losing connection, the entire router is resetting; green light blinks red til it resets, etc.

So- what will cause this? I'm not good with networking stuff generally, but pretty good with computers (I know how to get into the setup page, forward ports, change settings, etc... just not sure what settings may cause this). I'm very close to calling ATT and having them come fix it, but I live with the parents at the moment, they won't call, and not sure if their tech guys will talk to me or not (and their repair center isn't open at the moment)

    Any idears?

Edit: Some things I've noticed that may contribute, may not, but w/e.

Wireless Channel is set to 1, 2412 mhz. The phones in the house are 2.4ghz phones; however, using the phone itself does not reset the router / cause issues, and the internet will go out with nobody anywhere near the phone. Just thought it was interesting. I have the option to set 2417, 2422, 2427, 2432, 2437, 2442, 2447, 2452, 2457, and 2462 mhz.

Wireless mode is set to 802.11b/g. Other options are 802.11b, and 802.11g. 'Power Setting' (transmit strength?) is 4 out of possible 10. Not sure why this would affect, PC sits maybe ten feet from router.

Not sure if Upnp would have any bearing on this issue, but I can't find the setting anyway, heh.

    It's your router's firmware.

Go find out where and how to download the latest firmware, I can't help you there, I don't use a Linksys.

I know this because my friend had the exact same problem, using the same router. He updated his firmware and it hasn't happened to him since.

DD-WRT for all Linksys routers, you'll be amazed at the performance change. I was mad after I installed it because I didn't do it sooner. Although you have to be willing to accept the fact that you MAY brick your router if you don't do it right, lol.

Seconded. My old linksys router was having so many problems so I just installed dd-wrt and it pretty much fixed everything. The interface and features are nice, especially the bandwidth monitor. :D

How does one go about doing this safely? You have me interested but at the same time I want to be cautious about any actions that may potentially brick it.

After posting a tutorial for setting up static IPs on the 360, I realized that I also set my router to disable media sharing and upnp. The latter is what probably solved the problem, since I did the static IP to solve NAT problems iirc. As has been mentioned turn those two things off and your PS3/360 shouldn't DC you anymore.

As long as you follow the tutorial on dd-wrt.com, you will be fine. They have an extensive wiki that covers almost any router.
