Possible video card issue w/ ffxi

Im running a HD3870 on windows xp, sometimes when playing the game my monitor will go into standby mode and my whole computer will lock up, hdd light stays on steady when it happens.

It only does this in ffxi, which is making me wonder, my pc is in a cool room and i have 6 fans in the case(antec 900) could the video card be over heating causing the screen to cut off and lock up everything, keep in mind ive replaced the dvi cable 3 times now and it still happens.

Its getting pretty annoying and does it with 2 different lcd screens, is it time to replace this older ati card with something newer, perhaps a nvidia 9 series card? or is it something else causing it, anyone else had this issue and have an idea to whats causing it?

I can buy a new card on a credit card if it does need to be replaced, please give me your opinions/advice on this issue.

A newer card will still overheat. Make sure it's able to get enough clean air instead of recycled hot air. I've seen a lot of people put their PCs in that little cubby desks that circulate ever increasingly hot air and they never get cool enough, no matter how chilled the room is.
