I've been thinking about picking this up, but I'd like to hear from people who own it. Any and all opinions are welcome.

I just took a look at this, reminds me of Homeworld only you can take over planets and such.
I dig it, but fair warning, there is no actual story mode, just a bunch of scenarios. It can get old fast, but the game play that is there is pretty fun.
The different scenarios range from number of players/computers, planets, that kind of thing. There are different races to play, different technological trees to advance through, lots of stuff you can do differently, ways you can customize your units, so yeah.
I've never tried the online play, I don't know anybody else who owns it, and playing against computers is more than enough for me.
Advice: Never play an 8 man game in a 1v1v1v... setting with computer players. Chances are if you're the one raping face, everyone will gang up against you.
Lack of story mode was kind of a let down, especially considering the way the Vasari race is built up (fleeing from your homeworlds, dropping beacons as you run only to find them go out one by one as whatever impending doom draws closer), you'd swear there would be one.
However, the game has been quite the change of pace. It's always fun having a big fleet jump in and beat the shit out of whatever is waiting, although enemy fleets sure like to withdraw a lot.
Don't forget to patch it as soon as you get it installed. The initial release wasn't so much a game as it was trying to time a bid on pirates for the absolute last second. They toned pirates way down shortly after release though, so just patch it and it's fine.
Is there a sort of free-play where I can just try to build a giant empire like in Civ games? Also, how long is a typical game(be it AI or against others)?
