    DS flash card

I thought for sure there would be a thread on this but I don't see one, please feel free to point me towards it if I'm missing something.

I'm thinking of getting a flash card for my DS, but I'm concerned over compatibility issues and difficulty of use. If anyone has experience with a flash card, I'd appreciate any input or insight: what card you used, what card you think is best, what problems could possibly arise from using one, etc.

The main game I want to emulate is Chrono Trigger, but I'm sure I'll use it for a lot of other stuff too. So a flash card that's compatible with Chrono Trigger is an absolute necessity. Are there even compatibility issues with any games, or do pretty much all games work on all flash cards? (Piracy protection aside, I'm aware of some of the programming tricks companies use to try and prevent this shit and how to get around them)

The chatter I've heard on the net is that the CycloDS is pretty good, but I trust BG more than I trust net chatter.

Please move this to a better forum if it shouldn't be here, I wasn't sure if this was better in Gaming or Technical Support.

I'd recommend the r4ds, you can get it super cheap from here. I've ordered from that site a bunch of times and never had a problem. I've played Chrono Trigger on it, got a patched version of the ROM off blackcats, so I can confirm it works for you. I've never had any problem with any DS game I've downloaded.

    This.

I don't think the problem with Chrono Trigger is related to any specific flash cart, its just how the ROM is. And, as above, there is a patched version.

I have the R4DS as well. When Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles came out for the DS there was a glitch in it where it would send you to the end screen that says "Thank you for playing!". That is the only bad thing I have found on it, but a patch was soon released and works just fine :3

Is it safe to post where to get rom's or not?

It's probably best if people just get their ROMs off Blackcats or Demonoid or Usenet.

I used to have an R4, lost it. Bought a CycloDS Evo to replace it both worked fine for me, the CycloDS runs like a champ and the mid-game save feature is pretty solid.

This is better than the R4, which was good, but is old now: YouTube - AceKard 2 Hands On

Aside from that, the above-mentioned Cyclo is also great.

Are the R4s still being updated regularly? I recall reading something awhile ago about Nintendo suing the company. I've had my eye on one for awhile (screw importing JP games), but unsure if I should just go for the R4 or that Cyclo, as I want something that'll last.

The R4 isn't being worked on anymore. There was supposedly a newer version released which supported SDHC, but that's a clone (although some sites have argued to the contrary).

Well, it's only $15 (plus $15 shipping to my location), can't hurt if it doesn't really last long anyway.

AceKard isn't as cheap, but it's pretty inexpensive too. It's the cheapest current card you can buy that works well.

The R4 isn't bad either, it was always a very good card, but it's outdated now. So, you can only expect its usefulness to wane as time goes on. That doesn't mean you can't get a fair amount of use out of it, however.

Hmm, I guess I bought the clone. I bought a R4 DS SDHC from thedsdeals, it uses a 8GB Micro SD card I bought elsewhere. Still works good enough though, but I am more of a PSP person (I need a bigger screen/video out- well maybe not need, but want).

I have a Cyclo which replaced my DS-X (insert much finger pointing and laughing here) and I love it. Works perfect, I like the interface (since I make my own skins, it is a selling point to me...) and so far have had zero problems with it since getting it over 8 months ago.

Yeah, that's what I went with. Cost more than the others but it's the one I've heard the most about.

I also got a GBA adapter which should allow me to play GBA roms. Wasn't planning on that, but who can pass up the chance to play stuff like Fire Emblem 6 right on my DS Lite...

Couldn't you already play GBA rom with DS flashcart?

    Does every flashcart support this?

I think the CycloDS does, kinda, but I haven't tested the feature since there are no GBA games I play that don't have DS analogues already.

Well, my friend used his GBA flash cart to play DS game.

And I think I've seen FF6gba on my friend's cycloDS too, so I'm sure at least cycloDS supports that.

    I could be wrong though.

From what I've read for CycloDS, you need to have a flash-cart still to play GBA games, just it has that passme thing (or whatever it's called) built-in so you can load them from there.

I'm actually starting to be more interested in Cyclone now, more professional looking, better menu, just triple the price.....but uh...given' the purpose of the device............it's worth it. <.<

To clarify, you MUST have a GBA adapter that fits on the bottom slot on the DS to be able to play GBA ROMS. No DS Cart will be able to play GBA games. I learned this when trying to figure out where I was going to play Mother 3
