Yeah on a real note, Fishing and Cooking combo is probably the best/steadiest money maker this game has to offer.

Other than, say, stealing peoples gil AMIRITEOMNI!?!!?!?!?!?!?

I second the Fishing /Cooking combo. Fishing is PURE profit, and cooking only enhances the profit you'd make on the fish you'd sell.

For the most money/time not having to rely on HQ's to make profit, cooking is the way to go. its a consumable which everyone HAS to use (people are almost afraid NOT to pop food in any situation) so its always needed. It is just going to be time consuming is all.

3rd. The other crafts were good if you got in really early, especially if you were server first NA (ahem) or something like that. They are still profitable now (no matter how much you hear people bitch), but if you started one at the moment you would be extremely unhappy with how much gil you put into it when you see the returns out the other side.

Fishing is pure profit, as mentioned, and it also levels cooking and alchemy for you. Alchemy is one I would recommend as well. Even with sneak tools on the market, I still find Alch to be decent money and my highest Alchemist is 61. I don't know about the high end but it's a nice, cheap craft which you will highly enjoy with your fishing.

The profit comes from being 100 and getting HQs on popular items --SH, Haubs, and elemental staves. Anything outside those takes a considerable amount of time to sell. Not getting an HQ usually is a loss or just under breaking even.

Yeah but anymore you practically have to HQ at above (well above?) the known HQ rates on those popular synths to profit.

If I have to HQ 1/8 Prism Capes for them to be profit, then one of my popular HQs isn't profitable. I know elemental staves work the same. I understand what you mean about the NQ being close to break even, and I agree that can work in your favor. However even Nobles NQ (my SH) on this server is currently like 20% loss, so the 1/12 HQ doesn't come close to making up for it.

Haub and SH I can't speak to, not my crafts.

Just wanted to add, Fishing is the total sex of a craft/hobby, IF you can handle hours of boredom (you are a crafter right?). Its almost all money, very small initial investment, and almost pure profit.

Still, having Woodworking as an accessory is nice, and I plan to level Alchemy on a mule (these two have great synergy). When I get around to it, cooking is also on the menu. Having diverse income is always good in this game (due to limited AH slots).

Whatever craft you'll choose, keep in mind it's true that normal recipes rarely make profit anymore, for many crafts.
Consumables are always good and mostly profit, but it's a slow profit that will require time and it may not seem like a good investment in terms of time spent/money made.

Also, don't hesitate talking to other crafters about what they think is good or not for profit, if you're seeing this in a "profit" perspective. I expected to make money out of cursed items HQs, but I later realized NQs sell so slowly I can't really afford to attempt HQs often enough for it to be a real success.

Just like you'll need to think about the investment and long term profit. Cooking and Alchemy are rather cheap to make but they lack good expensive HQs therefore you can only expect them to be small profits at a time (though since it's mostly consumables you can "spam" these). Smithing would yield better profits once finished, but will obviously cost a lot more and take much longer to level.
Something in the middle may be Bonecraft, you won't need many subs, it's not too hard or expensive and you have Genie weskits and other nice recipes.

Completely honest response here, not being an ass. You say the initial investment is very small. Would you consider Lu to be an initial investment? I was under the impression this became sort of necessary 40+? On my server, Odin, they're nearly 3mil each.

edit: inb4 "dude why buy one? you only have to fish up 10,000 moat for a free one!"

LOL, this is very true. Lu Shang is an investment (either via time or gil). I personally spent a good two months fishing up Moats (break even as I was synthing my own insect paste), and if I were to start from 0 again, I would just farm and buy the rod (~2.5m on Bahamut).

This is an investment, but you should be able to afford this just by normal means by the time you really can use it (50+). If you really want to do the quest route, fishing in Windurst isolates Gold and Moat, so you will be making money for other things at the same time as bringing in loads of moat. It will take longer this way, but you will feel the rewards much sooner.

Once you get past that big hump, its all money from there. Just gotta be careful when using expensive lures to not pull up armor and always wear as much Fishing skill gear as possible so that the fish youre going for dont break the line.

Still, always have other means of income (other crafts, xNMs, farming, etc.)

You are never required to get Lu's to make money. You can make a rediculous profit getting from 0-11 from the cruddy moat carp (Remeber, this is -initial- profit. I recommend this for anyone fresh starting the game who want to sample and earn money). You can, in theory, easily get to 99 without ever touching lu's, as i'm pretty sure Perty never breaks Composite either, putting your initial cost at roughly.. 10k? not sure, been too long.

None the less, I quested the rod, and I hit 59 before I got it. Hume Fishing Rod was my joyous toy. And shall shells used to make profit too.

Nothing beats fishing, if you were to ask me. That being said, I say this:

Crafting is an enjoyable way to spend your time. But no matter what you choose, you won't be spending long doing it. It's a hit-or-miss thing, no matter what you pick you'll have the same chance of profit or bust either way. A good way to look at it is to break down what you would find exciting in a craft:

(if there's one thing you understand about crafting.. its that you'll most likely be making what's cheapest, NOT what you'd expect to really be making. You're not going to crank out 5,000 peices of armor, you're going to make some silly ingots over and over)

The real trick to crafting is finding a way to simply enjoy what you do. I fish for a living, because getting to 100 fishing used to be something of admiration (-and- stupidity). It wasn't hard, and it certainly doesn't do a damn thing to improving anything profit wise, but I enjoy it. I hate WW, I have it to 82 for repairing my Lu's and the first thing I'll do if I ever get the unbreakable rod is take it all the way back down. I love GS tons more and it's only at 40. Blowing up expensive crap is funtastic <3. But that's me.

If you're looking for the magic ticket, i'm afraid every market is tapped out. It's about enjoyment at this point , there's something out there for everyone.. just gotta test the waters and see what it is you enjoy the most.

There are Guides out there that offer a Moat Carp + Skillup Combo if you're working towards Lu Shang, but at the cost of slower skillups than a pure skill area (as if fishing wasn't slow enough).

Like many have said, Lu Shang is almost required for 50+ Fishing and it requires months of fishing + buying carps, or you can fish out (no pun intended) the 2.5m+ required to buy the damn thing. I spent about 3-4 months for mine, fishing and buying here and there.

If you do decide to fish for the Lu Shang, understand you need a shitload of patience, and not normal patience, I'm talking Mahatma Ghandi patience, because there is no exaggeration in these wait period people are posting.

I must admit though, I appreciated the Testimonal you get for completing the quest more than the actual Rod. You gotta love a quest that takes hours of playtime and several months to complete, and when you finally do, the game insults you on how irrelevant your endeavor was. The Lu Shang Testimonal pretty much sums up all of FFXI.

This to infinity. As if getting dragged through the mud wasnt enough, you get out the other side of the pit and SE kicks you in the e-nuts. Ah well, it helps knowing that this is the cheapest drug I could use, probably.
