    Tips on on dualboxing?

I just picked up a new laptop and figured I'd give my friend's account a whirl. I currently play on my shit-tastic ps2 and haven't had any legit gaming experiences using a PC/Laptop.

I'll probably go ahead and pick up the collectors addition tomorrow and since I'm used to using a controller..I suppose one would be necessary?

fast eyes. fast alb tabbing skills. fast in general.

Number one rule of dual boxing

If you suck at it, don't do it.
Playing one character to its full potential is better than two, half-assed characters.

Collection Edition works, or you can just torrent FFXI since you don't need the registration codes. That would save you the 15$ if you are familiar with torrenting. You can get a controller, or if you have a 360 those are easy to use on a PC. Personally though I'd suggest getting comfortable with a keyboard because it's really the most efficient way to play FFXI in my opinion.

Memorize macros. If you have to look and see which is which you're spending too much time on that character.

With windower you can make a macro that sends a command to your other ffxi window..

I don't plan on using it for anything other than a PL whore/duo with.

I'm not all too familiar with windowers programming .. but how would you go about doing this? Would be easier to PL myself with a ALT

Main problem I have with dual boxing (XBOX and my laptop w/ 360 Controller) is the controllers sliding off my fucking lap. Seriously, I need one of those controller holder thingies that stores use to let people play consoles.

Definetly get used to a keyboard, it makes things so much easier w/ dual boxing, even if you're just doing a duo/pl situtation. whem making you're macros utilize <stpc> that way you can tab through the different players that need healing as well as use F1-F6 when in a pt situation. When you're in the pt situation F1 and F2 are your best friends for healing your 2 chars. I find I spend most the time on the tanking char while tabbing over for heals/haste/erase and other random debuffs. It's also a good idea to make a mob debuff all in one macro, for example, i have one macro for paralyze, slow, dia II, and blind. The key to making that work is to lock onto the mob and start your debuffs then tab over to your tank char. I farm alot in Ifrits Cauldron on mobs that are em+ up to VT.

After awhile you'll get used to your macros and they'll become second nature and you wont have to think about which one is which.

Also The_OG_Nelta is correct, my LS doesnt rely on me to use both chars to their full potential. For the most part I'll main my lolmelee char and throw out random heals/raises/whatever's needed on my whm. Or viseversa, if a mage is needed more then the melee i'll be main on the whm and have the lolmelee out of the alliance.

Good luck with the attempt and don't get discouraged right away as it takes awhile to get proficient at it.

    1st. Your mileage may vary...

I always bring my alt to PL with.

    Start with easy macros like:

    /ma "Cure II" Name

    /ma "Haste" Name

    /ma Refresh <me>

    /ma "Sleep II" <stnpc>
    etc

This way you can just alt tab then Control 1 to cure the tank then Control 2 for yourself and Alt 1 for haste the tank alt 2 to haste yourself.. I can not stress enough to keep your macros similar so you don't have to look at what you are doing. Also, learn to do this in dunez or Quifim party where if you kill everyone it won't really matter. I rarely let my pl tank, it's just easier to have a tank in the party to keep track of.

I have a windower script for when I am using it has an outside haste person.. I can just have it infinitely cycle through this.

    /ma Haste "Name"
    /wait 23
    /ma Haste "2nd name"
    /wait 23
    /ma Haste "3rd name"
    /wait 23
    /ma Haste "4th Name
    /wait 10
    /ma Refresh <me>

I was using Autoexec to send a tell to my alt like "C2 Dave" which would make my alt cure 2 Dave. I lost the set up at one point, so i am back to windower scripts since I am not a very good programmer lol.

Be fast with Alt + Tab, memorize your macros. I'm pretty decent at it and have tri-boxed for "solo" assaults and other things. Beyond the mechanics, there are just some job combinations that do not work well; I've boxed my RNG and a RDM/DRK at Cerb, but RNG is a poor job if you're boxing because you can't just sit there auto-attacking like other jobs while you're waiting to stun on the other character.

Pretty much what has been said. Don't dualbox events you have to focus at (Einherjar for example) and don't dualbox both characters in the same party (BRD+RDM for merits) because you'll get mega slow EXP. Use one outside the group, mostly for powerleveling or assisting the group, never more than that. At least until you get the hang of it.

And if you suck at playing one character, don't even attempt to dual box.

It's a clickable interface to cast cures and buffs and also monitor some status elements as it can be seen in this screenshot.

FFXI dual boxing is hardly difficult unless you're doing stupid shit where you have to run a lot and one character has movement speed but the other doesn't, then it's still not difficult but just annoying . WoW dual boxing on the other hand, total pain in the ass.
