Is Vista really this retarded? (RAM)

Ok, so, I've been running Vista with 2gb RAM for quite a while. I know that's lowish for Vista, but I never had problems until recently.

In WotLK, I've started having issues with just getting kicked offline whenever there's too much shit going on around me. First thing I did was upgrade video card, and that worked great-- for a few days. After not long at all, I got the exact same problem.

So, further research and troubleshooting led me to believe the issue was my RAM. I know 2GB is like the absolute bare minimum for Vista.

So I upgraded to 4GB. Now, here's the thing: what made me almost certain that the issue was my RAM was the fact that I was basically sitting on 0 free RAM whenever I had WoW running, and just a couple hundred megs otherwise.


What's flipping me out now is... I upgraded to 4gb, and now I'm sitting here with firefox open and absolutely nothing else...

And showing an amazing 50 megs of free memory... WTF?!!

Is this normal? Is it just over-caching so that it's not wasted?

I haven't really expirimented with how it will perform in intense raid situations yet, but I'm afraid if I show up next week with the last thing I could think of to fix it done, and just start DCing as soon as drakes come down again, it's going to be the last time I get a shot with my guild.

Am I just going to have to say fuck it and go back to XP?

Check your task manager and see what is using up so much memory. I'm using 64 bit Vista with 4 gigs of RAM, and with all my random stuff (Sidebar, Digsby, MiRC, CloneDVD ripping stuff, Firefox) and WoW, I'm only using about 2.8 gigs of RAM. There must be something else in your system that's a memory hog.

The problem with vista is that it has trouble managing memory.

Exemple iirc Vista takes between 600-800mb ram to Start without any special program running

which is pretty gay to be honest. but yeah vista fucks up some ram

This is what I really don't get-- if you add up all the processes in my list, they add up to like... 1.3-1.4 gigs, if that.

The performance tab shows 3.6 gigs total RAM. It says 2399 megs of that is cached... and 5 are free...

Where's the other gig?


Also, another thing that made me almost certain it was the RAM-- I can go into any 25 man raid with a pug and be fine. If I go to Patchwerk with my guild, which has no aoe, nobody using aoe on him, etc etc., the most basic fight in the world... I still get kicked off. Presumably this is because pugs are fail and not using their shit to the fullest, whereas my guild will have 15+ dps all using abilities every single gcd at all times.

Are you on 32bit Vista? If so, all 4GB aren't going to be utilized by Vista.

It's not really something to worry about, as it'll free up memory from other programs if you open something else.

I recommend going to this site it has tons and i mean tons of good info on Vista 64 and 32 as some of the info applies to both.

i check it on almost a daily basis. it gives you lots of tips as far as adjusting memory, cpu, cache, startup processes etc.

Also, I think I found the problem with the WoW disconnects, has to do with the xp sp2/vista changes limiting incomplete connections per second in response to blaster virus and ddos and shit.

like already stated, superfetch is why you're seeing only 50MB available. windows is caching away the rest of your ram with apps/games/etc it thinks you will be using, decreasing their load times

If you have 4GB of RAM stop bitching about your OS using it. Vista will release any RAM it's using if you need it for another program.

Not sure what the story was but WoW ran significantly better with superfetch off, as did any other games that used any significant amount of memory. It was a gaming rig and superfetch didn't matter in the slightest to me.
