    Shopping for plane tickets

Every time I've traveled, my grandma has always taken care of getting the plane tickets, but now I'm a bit older and I'll be doing so for myself this time around. I how/where to look to get the best deals so I decided to turn to BG for help.

I'm looking to leave between (May 5)-(May 10) from Tampa international airport and flying to either LAX or an airport in Long Beach. I'll be staying at my grandma's until next semester for my school, so I'm looking to return on about Aug 10th give or take 5 days in either direction.

Looking to fly coach or w/e the least expensive one is and don't really care much for high tech (like the planes with a monitor in the back of every seat) unless it doesn't cost much extra. Also prefer non-stop, but if it is a GOOD deal less then I'm willing to switch planes.

Thanks in advanced for the help.

Call up a local travel agent to cross check pricing also. Liberty Travel has been cheaper than online on more than one occasion for me.

I actually learned a helpful hint from a friend who bought some plane tickets from Orbitz (my preferred choice.) If you buy your tickets between like 11pm-3am you will usually save like 10%-15% on the price....he said that this kinda deal is usually on all the ticket purchasing sites...

Osnap, DC is like 35 minutes from here.

I'd use expedia, if it wasn't for being military. We have our own sites for cheap shit. ^^

To anyone that does traveling, would you recommend getting a to and return trip at the same time? I'm going to be gone about 3 months and not rly 100% locked on a return date yet (just wanna make it back about 2 weeks before the semester starts) and the school calender for 09/2010 hasn't been made yet. I was looking to return in the beginning of August (because usually starts at the end of that month), but if i can get an extra week out of my trip buying the tickets separately instead of locking in my return date w/o having to pay much more (if any at all), I'd rather do that.

Be careful if you're a fatty, United Airlines may charge you for two seats!

I've always had really good luck with cheaptickets.com - most of the trips I've taken in the last 4 years have been booked through them.

Generally try to buy your tickets a month before your actual trip. The earlier the better seeing how they are soooo much cheaper the farther you go out.

Fuck Expedia and all that shit, they are just charging your extra for the LITTLE amount of leg work you have to do planning it yourself.

kayak.com will search multiple sites all at once and often (9/10) consistently beat other prices, including southwest.com. You can see which sites were used in the search on the menu to the left of the window. You can search Cars, Vacations, Cruises, deals, etc., too. Try to buy tickets about a month or more in advance and you can definitely save more money. I've never tried a travel agent myself, but would they try to beat stuff on these other websites too if you showed them?
