if you're getting even the slightest tingle in your pants for the new Wii Tales game and Arc game, you're pretty much a giant hypocrite because those two games both pretty much epitomize the terms generic, bland, and mediocre based on what information we have to go off of.

-impossibly generic anime character designs/artwork. i mean seriously, while nomura's stuff is predictable, you're not confusing it with every middle-of-the-road anime or jRPG ever made.
-outdated gameplay: a turn based system and another rehash of Tales' combat system. if you're lucky, you might get a done-a-thousand-times minigame too!
-bland looking vanilla fantasy world
-stories will most likely be mediocre. c'mon, you know it's true.

if the original game remains good, then the gameplay in that game can still be good/valuable. but bringing old stuff with no innovation to a modern package is outdated in the sense that it holds no value- might as well just go back and play Dragon Quest 1.

Think of it like special effects. Jason and the Argonauts is still dope but if The Nightmare Before Christmas looked/moved exactly like those skeletons, people wouldn't think so highly of the movie. Gotta step your game up.

lol, this is quite true. I dont think it is smart to downgrade Japanese style RPGs just because they have more simple interfaces/combat systems. I in fact like it MUCH more than trying to actively manage 2-6 characters in a DnD style system. DnD is a complex game and I still dont feel it really lends itself easily to the electronic medium.

Japanese turn based rpg style lends itself much more toward single player enjoyment without getting too bogged down in its own complexity. Usually, it is also fun and has a good plot. I like that.

"wRPGs" are Strategy/RPGs. So it is a bit of stretch to say the genre is fake when it is partially true. Now many games are falsely labeled WRPGs. People call anything made by Bioware or Bethesda a WRPG if they just feel like it. It really is the whole Square Enix Action RPG bullcrap all over again.

There are two reasons why wRPGs haven't really moved forward since the late 90s:

1) The main reason: Few developers still care about them. They make for some terrible console ports. They have lost their place to MMOs and free-roaming FPS. We are still getting them fortunately, but they remain stagnant because...

2) No one is smart enough to apply Deus Ex's narrative style to any type of RPG game. Be it WRPG or FPS.

As for the rest of your post... I am guessing you mean aesthetics? Most flavors do come in high-fantasy or high-science, I can't really say much there. Videogames need more steampunk, modern, low-fantasy, and other rare settings.

So WRPGs aka Strategy/RPGs do have it better than JRPGs aka really lame Strategys. That isn't saying a lot. Well if you consider settings and fancy music the most important part of the game this post has been pointless.
