In a month I'm taking two parts to a California state test that I need in order to be an English teacher here. The second test is all about how English evolved/how children learn languages/etc. I've been having to study a lot about how English has changed. Book would probably be interesting/help me.

Yeah, using toon instead of avatar or pc or whatever the hell you want to refer to a character as is far from being the problem in that quote. And seriously, there is nothing wrong with language if people universally understand what you are talking about. Among the people who will read that quote, they will understand what toon is referring to, thus it is not in any way inappropriate.
