    Networked Macros?

So I have a home network and a have a 2TB RAID 5 drive on my HTPC that I use as storage. I also play FFXI on a couple of different computers throughout the house and have to copy and paste my FFXI\User and windower macros all the time because I make some changes to one computer while playing.

I was wondering if anyone has tried this yet.

To Copy over your FFXI\Users folder and windower macros to a network storage then in all the computers create shortcuts with the same names to the networked one, so i dont have to keep copying the data from one to another if i make some changes.

I do use windower marcos so I dont really want to use the SE solution, unless you guys do that?

Just a thought, anyone tried or have a similar situation/solution?

Put FFXI on your main network server/computer and remote desktop when you want to play.

I'd probably be more likely to use something like Synctoy or any other Syncing app if the files were of any considerable size, but if everything involved is pretty tiny and unnoticeable for network sharing it seems like a pretty good idear.

Couldn't you mount the network share as a directory on a local drive in XP assuming you're using NTFS?

You can share the entire FFXI/Windower folders, as long as you update the paths in the registry on each system so that they point to the right places.

A better solution would be to use some kind of file sync software, but the only one I know that's dead simple to use (Dropbox) doesn't let you sync arbitrary folders.

You can't add alternate paths to a network drive, and you can't use junction points either. What you can do is use an NTFS symlink if you're on Vista/7. With an elevated command prompt...

    mklink /D "C:\Program Files\whatever\the\path\is" \\yourserver\yoursharedfolder

I don't have POL/FFXI installed, so I can't give you the exact path, but I'd recommend sharing the folder that holds all your macros (the one with all the garbage names just above your actual character's folder) and not anything higher - that way you avoid log corruption from the various copies of FFXI using the same temp log folder. Of course, with this approach, you have to have full installs of FFXI on each of the PCs, and you have to move or delete the folder that you want to "replace".

You can share Windower without any weirdness, just throw it on your storage volume and make shortcuts.
