Dark Ixion, Cavernous Maws, and Avatars lag me to shit..

    Hi, everyone.

I'm running on a AMD quad-core Processor with 4GB of ram with Vista 64-bit OS. Currently using a nVidia 8400 GS and it runs FFXI with top resolution perfectly until..

I come across an Avatar, Dark Ixion, telepoint crag, or a Cavernous Maw. My FPS drops extremely to where I start looking like an 8-bit Mario running across the screen. I was wondering if anyone has had this issue and resolved it, or if I am at a halt because of the video card I am using? I updated the newest driver and to be honest.. I didn't like what it did for me. Made Dual Boxing worse than before.

If you have any comments or suggestions please throw them my way. Been trying to find threads everywere, and I haven't had any luck. Thank you all in advance!

The newest driver package from Nvidia doesn't get along well with FFXI. Back in the day, the 174.74 drivers worked flawlessly for me. I have no idea if they're still available, but anyway, your best bet is to roll back your drivers to earlier versions and test with each one until you find one that eliminates the lag.

I once had an issue where Firaga or Escape would almost lag me out, but that ended up being an SLI issue (apparently FFXI doesn't like it).

    Do you use SLI currently?

I'm no expert when it comes to graphics terminology, sorry Khamsin.

Actually before I installed the Video Card and I was using the manufacturer's display adapter it was fine, which makes me a little peeved.

Yes, the graphics look great, but I'd love to try and fix this issue.

Also, thank you Cephius. I will try that.

Just to note I'm running on the 186.18 Driver I believe for this Card. If anyone has a resolution to anything with this "glowy aura", please reply.

Also, the Ix'grah in Ru'hmet lag me the same way Dark Ixion does.

    Even though Dark Ixion is the complete worst. ; ;

Edit: Am now using the 174.74 Driver the Cephius suggested, still the same problem.

    GeForce 8400GS Specs:

    Core Clock (MHz) - 450
    Shader Clock (MHz) - 900
    Memory Clock (MHz)- 400
    Memory Amount - 256MB
    Memory Interface - 64-bit
    Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec) - 6.4
    Texture Fill Rate (billion/sec)- 3.6
DirectX Support - up to version 10

Tele crystals & avatars always seem to lag up easier than anything else I've seen in the game. Even Whitegate lag doesn't seem as bad when you compare it to walking up to a crag in a sparsely populated zone.

That GPU should actually play the game well despite being an older low-end card... mainly because the game is coded to use the CPU more and your graphics card will only offload so much work. So I'd like to know which specific Phenom processor you're running because I'm thinking it's the CPUs clock speed.

I had the same problem as the OP, so I rolled back the drivers to 175.16 and have never lagged during teles and shit. Although, I'm surprised you're lagging at DI, usually it's just the teles and firaga IIIs that people have troubles with.

The fact that it's DI+Maws+Avatars tells me it's the particle blur in particular causing the problem in this case, instead of just mass quantities of the same texture/particle overlays being displayed in rapid succession. I'd wager he'd lag out on a GM's appearance, too.

But yeah rolling back drivers should help. Hooray for lack of technical development by SE!

Speeding up will go a LONG way here. Either try overclocking or upgrade to something over 2.4gHz.

I have no experience with overclocking a computer. Any guides? Maybe a walkthrough? Lol.

    Sorry. Thank you again.

Believe it or not, I just came across an nVidia System Tool to Overclock and monitor GPU Temperature. Maybe this is my solution?

Question is. How much do I speed up?

    Just also found out my GPU Temperature is hovering over 100 degrees Celsius. I'm going to fix this asap. @@;

I'm on a 3 GHz machine and I lag so much that chat lags in my own moghouse. SE told me to go to drivers from April 2005 for my Radeon 9600 Pro, because it started getting ~10 FPS everywhere in-game once WotG came out, and it doesn't just affect WotG zones, it affects everything. I've got plenty of RAM, at 3 GB.

lol, I just upgraded my mobo, CPU, case and cpu fan last night, so obviously I reformatted my PC and everything. With my old PC, I would get 25-26 at the MH with everyone loaded, but now I'm getting 12-15 fps. I rolled back to the 169.15 drivers that were on beta for FFXI but no dice. Anyone got any suggestions?

Edit: Whoops, I had the wrong drivers. I need to get the 169.17 drivers. I'll give ya updates to see if these work for me after work.

Yeah, no dice. Still lags like shit for on the 169.17 drivers and the 175.16 drivers. Anyone else recommend another pair of nVidia drivers for FFXi

I had the same problem with as the OP with the same things on my old computer. On this computer though, they don't lag me, but I can't even see the things. I can't see avatars or Ixion, except when Ixion charges up for a tp move just for a second. Other than that it's just a name for the whole fight...

Ok, I found my problem. Every time more than 10 people show up on my screen, it lags extremely bad but for things like DI, teles and such, I'm not affected by it at all.

Its a common problem with certain nvidia cards and overclocking probably won't be too effective on overall FFXI performance. Its a 7~ year old game :/ Your best bet is to look for a compatible driver.

On my Nvidia desktop I had to disable bunch of graphical details in order to get a decent frame rate but ACP Crystal, Teleport Crystal, avatars and bard songs still lag me hella alot.

On the other hand, my ATI Macbook Pro runs the game flawlessly.

Getting pretty tired of having 3 FPS in my own moghouse and having lag navigating the menus because of it. I'm changing ISPs later this week, so I'll finally have one that my PS2 works on again and will be able to go back to 30 FPS on it. It's hard to find another AGP graphics card that's affordable and as good as the one I have, and I still wouldn't be sure the game would run any better, so PS2 seems the best choice instead.
