Anyone ever get tutored one on one for the SATs?

I have a parent who wants me to tutor their kids on the SATs. I'm not a professional though, and I'd work off the college board teaching book to do so so it should be ok, but trying to figure out how to price them. It'd be an 18 week program for them (two times a week). Problem is everywhere I look the prices range from as low as 400$ per student (for a group session to 2000$ per student (one on one). For sure I'd be in a way lower range since I am not a professional, but 400$ is too little for 1 on 1 (group sessions make the money off of having lots of students all at once, whereas I'd only have 1 at a time).

So basically just trying to see what the common rate is, and if you could tell me what your tutor's qualifications were that would be great too so I can base myself off of them.

$2000 is not too much for 36 meetings. That's only 55.55$ per meeting, how long are the meetings going to be? I would assume 2-3 hours each? Anything less and I wouldn't even bother with it. 18 weeks is a long time to work your schedule around. To me, seems like more of a headache than it would be worth, especially if they're dumb. Teaching dumb people is so annoying.

    People study for the SATs?

I went out drinking the night before and scored a 1900, never cracked open a book.

If they have to study for the ACT/SAT, they're probably gonna bomb it regardless. It's really shit you should just know after 16/17 years of life. Went in with no preparation and got a 34 on the ACT; dunno what that translates to for the SAT, but meh.

Oh well, if people are willing to pay, let 'em pay. How long is a session? You should probably set an hourly rate if it's over an hour each.

People hire tutors for the SAT because you don't study for the it in the conventional sense. The test isn't designed to test your intelligence or knowledge to begin with, seeing as it's all simple shit. It's designed to trick you and make you get a bad grade.

Tutors for them usually show you the ways the problems will trip you up, and teach you how to counter them.

well I got some good info, but for the pessimists, the reason I'm tutoring these two is because they're chinese. The boy has only been in the US for a year, and the girl just got off the plane three days ago. They are both in 11th grade so the parents want them taking the SATs, so mostly teaching words/comprehension to help them as best I can.

I had a tutor for the SAT's back in grade 8. I didnt go in with much enthusiasm, and I didnt even try to get a decent grade. If your going to charge, I think about $50-70/hour is fair.

I'm not sure how far you're going to get teaching them how the verbal part of the test works. From what I recall when I took it in the days of no writing component, it was a glorified vocabulary test. Even if you are a miracle worker, and can at least teach them how the test is going to work with stuff like reading comprehension, analogies, and grammar/syntax, their actual success in that section is going to be based on how much they've read in English.

If they've grown up with the language, it may not be all that bad of an experience for them, but the way you've introduced them suggests that English might be a serious issue.

this is not the first I've taught foreign students, just the first time I've had to focus on the SATs.

I have to study up since I know the SATs have changed a lot since I took them, but things like roots and practicing comprehension can go a long way, even helping their school grades if not their SAT grades.

1900 on the SAT? WTF? Back in my day, it was capped at 1600. Anywho, From what I remember, a lot of it was spelling and grammar. I'm not sure how well these 2 students are with that now, but it'll be rough if they want to do well without any kind of prior english learning already done. Good luck to you.

Back on topic, though. My cousin did training and they paid about $55 an hour.

I didn't study for either, got drunk and high and didn't sleep beforehand, took both the same day at the same time and got perfect scores on both while writing with my weak hand and not reading the questions.

Figured I'd share my story about how little I cared and tried and still did awesome to show how cool I am too.

Anywho, make sure to take into consideration how loaded the parents are before pricing so you can try and leech out as much as possible.

I do the odd spot of tutoring privately for younger kids (5-11 year olds) and get work through an agency. They reckon I should charge between £19 and £25 an hour for one-to-one tutoring for that age group - but I have to pay commission out of that to them as well. Think they charge more for older kids/tutors with higher level qualifications etc if that's any help - of course that's UK prices.
