Artificial sweeteners 'do nothing to help weight loss' (who knew)

Artificial sweeteners 'do nothing to help weight loss' - Telegraph

Professor Soraya Shirazi-Beechey, from the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Liverpool, found that a sweet taste receptor, present in the taste cells of the gut, allows humans and animals to detect glucose within the intestine.

Artificial sweeteners behave in a similar way to sugar however, and activate the sensors in the gut key to glucose absorption.

The receptor also detects artificial sweeteners in foods and drinks, resulting in increased intestinal intake of dietary sugars. This could explain why artificial sweeteners are unsuccessful at helping people lose weight, and sometimes result in weight gain.

Professor Shirazi-Beechey said: "If someone wants to lose weight, I don’t think artificial sweeteners are going to help.

"My recommendation is to eat natural foods, but to eat less of them."

Prof Shirazi-Beechey said: "Artificial sweeteners can also activate the glucose sensor and increase the capacity of the intestine to absorb more sugar.

"You drink diet cola to stay slim but the reverse is true, because the artificial sweeteners can activate the sensor, so you are taking more glucose from your diet."

Prof Shirazi-Beechey's research can be seen at an exhibition at the Food Museum in Switzerland. The exhibition, called Research Food – a Dialogue, looks at food history, science and technologies.
I've always figured people who drink diet products were stupid to think that it's 'less fattening' than non diet products.

Even if that is true, the soda still has zero calories and doesn't contain the 40+g of sugar itself unlike regular soda which trips the sensor and provides the glucose to be absorbed. Yes, it is good info knowing that diet soda will result in more of the sugars from your meal being absorbed; but the same thing can be said if you had something like candied yams or carrots as a side dish or a small dessert after your meal.

Every one of these articles always boils down to the same thing. Don't be stupid with your eating / living habits and you won't be fat.

Basically this means those people who get the Super-sized Big-Mac combo with an apple pie and oh yeah...Diet Coke aren't helping themselves like they think they might be.

Kind of misleading, as it seems that they're comparing artificial sweeteners to nothing at all, instead of comparing them to sugar/HFCS.

^ This is what the study refers to, basically another way of saying 'you still have to exercise and eat properly to lose weight, tubbs.'

You can't drink diet soda and eat 100 calorie packs of oreos and expect results.

If common sense doesn't tell you that ordering a diet coke with your super sized big mac meal plus apple pie doesn't help your waistline, no study will.

I only drink one or two sodas per month, but by god they're in full sugar glory, none of that corn syrup for me. Most of the time I have to resort to Mexican shit in Jarritos, but it gets the job done. It's damn tasty.

Sugarfree Red Bull is way easier to choke down than regular Red Bull. Both taste leagues better than any other lo-cal caffeine vector out there.

What about the fact that the sorbitol, the main ingredient in most artificial sweeteners, is a laxative? That could sure help in weightloss. And yes, sugar free redbull > redbull

    This a 1000 times over.

Diet sodas aren't a cure-all, but it is indeed better than having a regular one. It's like say going to Chiptole. Now this isn't the healthiest meal option in the world, but if I say get a burrito bowl instead of a burrito, that is a lot better. A burrito bowl diet probably won't be making you lose weight, but if you have a craving for it on occasion, not a bad option.

Subway is similar on the other end. Yeah, it is a healthier option in general...but not if you are having a foot long with double meat or double cheese with a ton of mayo slathered on it instead of a six-inch sub with no cheese and mustard.

Diet colas are still better in that they usually have no calories or carbs. Go compare a can of coke to coke zero (or even diet coke).

I only drink sugar-free stuff because of the unhealthy amount of sugar in most energy drinks and sodas. In fact, it seems everything has a ton of sugar in it. The soy milk at Starbucks is 13g of sugar per serving. So, I try to drink some sugar-free stuff just to make my total sugar intake lower.

If you're drinking sugar-free stuff as an active step to lose weight, you're ridiculous.

I lost 40 lbs in a couple months by just taking sugared beverages out of my diet. I don't feel very ridiculous.

I heard somewhere that one Vitamin Water has as much sugar as one can of Coke.

I know of some girls from where I work who just drink Vitamin Water to stay thin. And that's pretty much all they ingest. They believe that they get enough vitamins from the water to avoid real food.

You're ridiculous because the study says so! There's no way that cutting calorie intake will help you lose weight, you ridiculous, ridiculous man.
