    LOVE: Procedurally Generated MMO

Really interesting MMO I came across just a few moments ago, thought I'd share it.

It's being developed by one guy but it looks amazingly complex and could shape up to be an extrememly interesting game. It would be about 200-300 people on a server playing together, all for a single goal. So while MMOs these days tend to force players into smaller groups or alliances, this game is more focused on getting those players to work together to shape the world.

It's worth reading his stuff and watching the videos, they are all very interesting.

    LOVE: Main Website

    LOVE: Gameplayer Demo

This game was on Kotaku/Joystiq a long time ago with a video demo. Looks worse than watching paint dry to me....

Interesting... I think its great that a game built on a concept like that exists, and the screens are pretty (yay for attractive color combinations)... but Im just not sure that it would be fun to play.

Looks... like a lot of fun to me for some reason, idk

Maybe its because I used to play ActiveWorlds... basically, a 3D chat program that gave you a lot of freedom to do things... MMO I guess kinda, but I'm not sure it was intended as a game. Basically, you could roam out into free space, generate an 'item' (basically a generic block) and then input an item code into it to morph it into all sorts of things; a wall, a door, a window, etc. You could build whatever you wanted- I played and met some people (was only 13 at the time) and together we built our own little city... tons of fun, not sure why. Even the sims doesnt match the feeling for me. This seems quite similar though

I wasn't too impressed by the actual game, it sounds quite confusing and over complicated for an MMO. However, I was definately impressed with his home made dev suite. Really cool set of programs he has working. He mentions they are open source, which sounds mighty cool, not like I could do anything with them though...!

This game will be good for a resume down the line.

It seems like it's already good for a resumé, he says on his blog that he's already had lots of interest in his dev tools from games companies who want to expand on the tech, and employ him to make more tools for them to use...

Reading through his site, he seems preoccupied with "story" without ever understanding what it means in videogames. He seems to advertise Love as something like a RPG, but really he just bringing up examples that can be found in ANY game.

If you have ever played a multiplayer game you have stories, stories of how you where the last survivor on your team, stories of how you captured the flag just before the timer ran out, stories of luck and failure. Love takes that kind of emerging story creation and expands it to a long lasting canon.
    Just lol...

I like all the gadgets, but I suspect how they will be applied won't be "amazingly complex" at all. What good is building a fancy town/fortress if what you do inside it is boring? (EDIT: Weltall already brought up watching paint dry, perhaps that's it.)

The graphics give me a headache. Especially that weird hazy effect.

Looks like a cool concept, but it does look painfully boring, and the graphics are quite bad.

I was thinking the exact same thing, but maybe the guy didn't add all the textures in just yet? I doubt every object will be white like that. Game would get pretty confusing at times. : p

Well, he says he wants that magazine page turning effect, where if you flick through the pages and catch a glimpse of a screenshot you know it's his game. I guess pastel colours and crazy haze effects and blurred edges on objects, with no actual texturing is what does it for him!

Kind of like that girl with down syndrome and hairy arms that you can't get out of your head no matter how hard you try.

The primary thing that bothers me about the gameplay demos I've seen is how much he cheats to make the game seem even remotely interesting. The only part he didn't cheat to do was to grab the unidentified 'token' at the start of the demo. Is that really all you're doing to 'grind' your way to more complex building tools?

I think it's important to consider this isn't a trailer really, it was simply a demo of the things you'd see in the game and how things may work. It's hardly a finished product.

He chose to make it public but being one guy he needs to cover costs, so that's where the measely 4.50 US comes in. I bought a voucher just to support him really, I probably won't end up testing much.
