Flashing xbox360 drive?

I'm looking to flash my xbox 360 dvd drive, so i can play burnt games.
I'm a bit confused, but was going to dive in head first and see what kind of expensive mistakes I can make.

As far as I can tell, you have to connect the 360 drive to your computer (Serial ATA), but your computer won't recognize it. That's when you have to purchase a device to work as the middle man? I assume that's what the 'xecuter connectivity kit' or the '360 xtractor' devices are for.

Afterwards, use a program to slap in a custom firmware, and we're good to go?

Do I have the gist of it?

Yes, though you don't need to buy anything.

There's programs that will put the device into service mode for you so you can just flash from there.

Only exception is one of the drives, forget which one, out of the like 20 they've used.

I recently took on this project. Took me many hours of confusion and frustration to get everything setup and reliably working. Would also recommend checking craigslist for someone near you.

Yah, my two friends paid some guy to do it, but I intended to figure it out, and then do my bro's and my other's friend. Combined savings of 150 (assuming I don't blow anything up).

Ah, I'll jack open my 360, and see what it's like.

People make it out to be more than it is.

Seriously it's a 2 step process.

#1. Put drive in service mode(through various different methods)
#2. Flash Drive.

I knew nothing about it, and got it done in under an hour from "how do I flash my drive?" to done...

You just can't be intimidated by "oh noz I'm gonna fuck it up!"...that's pretty much modding in a nut-shell, I can't even charge people to do it for them cause I feel guilty charging for something so easy.

Same as Kiehl. I had to switch to a 32bit OS, and use two different programs simultaneously. At first I was using just one, Jungle flasher I think it was called, but it would never detect that my drive was in service mode so it couldn't read the drive's flash memory. I then had to use another program for that part to get some key, paste that somewhere and ... yeah its fucking confusing. What drive do you have?

Yea thats the benq VAD6038 drive, my friend and I have the same one. I followed this guide, Flashing Benq VAD6038 drive Tutorial : Xbox 360 Tutorials

It made it really simple. Also, you dont need the connectivity kit. Here is the process that i did
Turn off computer
Have the A/V and power cables plugged into your xbox (360 is OFF)
Plug your drive into your motherboard via a sata cable
turn on and boot into windows (32 bit winXP please...)
Open up dosflash
Turn on xbox, open tray, close tray, BUT put your finger in the way and hold it, it should stay there and not move
Now unplug the power line going into your drive, then plug it back in, (***Make sure you dont replug it in upside down, it will kill your drive)

And it should be in vendor mode without the need of that addon thing...

Oh and also if you havn't opened your box up yet, youll need a special torx screwdriver. Don't try other ones or youll strip the screws.

sorry for sounding dumb but will flashing the drive allow "back up" games without needing to mod the actual 360 itself?

I'm slapping a custom firmware on my dvd drive, so that my dvd drive will actually read burnt media (and assume that it is a real game).

I'm gonna be doing mine tomorrow, after I pick up my bro's 360 opener and torque screwdrivers. Hilarious update coming? :D

are there any mod for you to be able to play games stored on the HDD without the disc in the drive?

Not that I know of. But most games let you copy it onto the hdd and it'll only check the disc when you're first loading up the game.

Which is fine, since it cuts down the noise, and the reduces the stress on the lazer.

Just to point out, unless you have a set of torx bits you'll need size 8-10 security bits in order to open the case fully.

Other than that, just read all the instructions thoroughly (I recommend those on 360Mods News) and make sure you understand them before proceeding to the next step, otherwise you could potentially fuck something up. It's pretty straight forward once you know how.

I would say the hardest part of the entire process is opening the damn case.

Welp, I spent about an hour cranking my 360 open (gawd, terrible).
Afterwards, spent about 2 hours trying to get my computer to read the 360 dvd drive. That DosFlash program did an awesome job, but only the latest version worked for me (the first one I downloaded didn't recognize it).

I threw in a legit game, and it works fine.
I haven't put in a burnt game, cause I'm using ABGX (to check if the CRC match / stealth). Currently getting this: http://i38.tinypic.com/biv7me.jpg

I'm a bit iffy, if I want to burn this.
It came pre-stealthed, downloaded 70ish rar files.

Yeah that's strange, never had that issue with mine. Get it from another source, and check again.

I have yet to attempt any downloaded 360 games.
Gamefly will be your best friend to make sure you get working copies.

I worked out a deal with a local store to let me rent games for a dollar a day.

Had no idea it could be this simple. Definitely doing this tomorrow. Always thought modding 360s required soldering and stuff.

Edit: Will I be able to do this in 64bit windows 7, or am I going to have to make a partition for 32bit XP for the time being?
