Hey BG,

I don't post here a lot (as you can tell this is a new account), well I used to, but I stopped playing FF so all I really do is lurk alot as I enjoy some of the post on here..

Well anyways, there has been a situation come up at work and I thought I would get your guys opinion on it. Well there is this guy at work who is constantly lying about things, like he is always there to rain on your parade by one upping you on absolutly everything, no matter how little or small, or just lying to look cool I guess or fit in.

I guess you could call him a pathological lier, as he fits all the characteristics.

My question is to your guys is how do you think I should handle this dude, or get back at him.

Ignore him. Unless he's talking shit about you, there's no point in worrying about it. Roll your eyes at the people around you, let them know he's full of shit and let him do his thing.

I had a situation like this when I worked at a place in the past.
Nothing ever changed, but the guy started dating my ex of like 3 months
at the time, which REALLY didn't go well.

Do you need to "get back at him"? Has he harmed you, or put himself in a position to harm you, either socially or professionally?

In my experience, lying inevitably comes back to bite the person in the ass, and while it may be annoying to deal with in the short term, it's rarely worth fighting in the long run.

Also in my experience, if you know he's lying, chances are you're not the only one who's aware of it.

If you brag about landing a 7 foot marlin on Saturday, and he ups you with a story about a 9 footer he caught two weeks earlier, then why does it matter to you?

But, if you [performed x task at work] and he took credit for it, then there's a problem. If this is the case, you need to be sure you document your work. Tell your supervisor ahead of time when starting special projects, if you can, give yourself a paper trail, and just obey the general "cover your ass" rules. If you can show that the guy is lying in such a way that it jeopardizes your employment or your workplace, then there are steps you can take to resolve that within your company.

If all else fails, pull a George Castanza the next time he one-ups you, and announce tol the whole workplace in a loud voice that you had sex with his wife.

There is a dude like that in our apartment complex, we call him Chatty Cathy. He constantly bullshits because he is trying to impress. I believe it is a insecurity and overcompensation issue. They feel that if they have a familiarity or one up story for every subject that they can some how relate to each person if not by impressing them then by outdoing them.
The best bullshitters have stories that are unprovable such as things only they can prove or relate to authentically. This guy we live near, has a recurring special forces story he tells regarding how he almost stopped a nuclear war in the 80's with Germany at the Berlin Wall. He also had numerous famous people living at his house such as a guy from Alice In Chains during his hiatus from the public spotlight. XD

The best way to deal with them is to hold them to everything they bullshit about and requiring them to prove it. Embarrassing them in public by making them validate their bullshit or admit they made it up, helps cut back on the stories some what.

Remember, he may have much more desire and obligation to uphold that lie than you do in revealing the fact that it is false. It may cause him to get hostile since it relates to his "rep". If it is worth your time to disprove bullshit stories, do it in a kind way by asking about it if you really want to reap continued conversation on yourself.

We pretty much avoid him by getting inside the apt asap when we see him, considering it a lost cause to try to un-bullshit him.

Just call him out on it. We have a guy like this where I work. When he bullshits you tell him that he's full of shit. Or you can just suck it up and deal with it. Although the former is much more entertaining.
