    Least painful way to reinstall

    Hey All,

My laptop just went belly up for the final time and I am ordering a replacement.

Does anyone have any advice as to the least painful way to install FFXI on the new one? My macros are all backed up on the server and I have been able to pull all my files off the old machine's HD.

If I missed a thread on this please point me in the right direction - I did try searching first.

    Thanks.

Just install everything and then transfer the files you backed up? I'd rather put up with the installing than an overnight update.

    Cream Soda taught me this:

    Install Vista POL if required
Install POL/base FFXI (base assuming FFXI, RoZ, COP)
Copy Pasta old FFXI folder into new machine folder (assuming it has ToAU and WoTG in it)

Run POL with your account infos, let POL update
    Reboot POL
    Go into game
it will do a file check
download SOME but not ALL update files where appropiate

No need to install ToAU/WoTG, no messing with registry, nothing. This will by pass most update files but it will inevitably download some. However, better than waiting for it to download all.

I downloaded everything off the discs like normal (I have all the original expansions so I didn't have the convenience of one DVD <_<), copy and pasted all the folders that I could onto a 4g flash drive, dumped them on the new computer, rinse, repeat. I did this for about an hour until I got everything from ROM1,2,3 and 4 and then ran a file update. Took about an hour and a half, two hours all together.

Forgot to mention I also grabbed the most recent patch provided by Aikar on the windower forums before I did the last update after I copied all those folders over.

buy the newest version of the game with all expansions and addons and you wont have any super long updates

although you could just not reinstall and break the cycle

If you've backed up your directory, just install FFXI on the new machine and copy your old directory over top of it. It'll do a file check, then should be good (assuming you have the latest updates already). You should end up with all your macros n' such.

It's also possible to do without installing first by manually copying over the registry entries and registering DLLs...but that might be considered "harder" - more technical at least.

I did the registry copy over and registering dlls. There should actually be a small technical guide somewhere on BG.

I remember there being one on the Windower forums that I'd used before, but it'd been a while.

Thanks all for the advice. I guess I'll just pick up the latest DVD for least painful reinstall, then paste my USER folder into the installed and updated game.

Although maybe it's time to break the cycle... hmmm. Not such a bad idea.

There was a way you just copy the registry, and then paste them and run something and just play. Its the way I did it.

it's only painless if you're going from the same type OS to OS, like 64bit vista > 64bit vista/win7
if you're going from 32bit to 64, you'll have to edit the registry file to add in the wow6432node, but if done right, this whole process should take however long it takes of you to install POL and copy files from your backup to your harddrive and then you can be up and running (if your backup is updated).

I can upload my registry if you want, since you don't have your old system to pull it from.

That is still very out of date if I remember correctly. Could have sworn I read someone on another forum I visit bought it and still had to go through a 7+ hour update.

Great, thanks. That's going to save hours of messing about with updates, and the $20 it would have cost for the newest DVD version.

    I appreciate the info.

Well, my laptop recovered enough for me to log in last night and back up my macros to the server. Amazingly, my 60 saplings had also survived and were ready for harvest so I took full advantage - saved me from losing a lot of gil.

I think I'm going to need to reinstall since old OS is 32bit Win XP and the new will be 64bit Win7. The machine architecture is also very different (quadcore + ATI vs my old dualcore + NVidia). I picked up the new DVD and it looks as though the install process won't be too bad.

If anyone knows of issues with 64bit Win7 and FFXI or Windower, please let me know. Thanks.
