Cleaning C drive

My laptop is partitioned into C and D. C drive having 43 gigs and D drive having 250ish gigs.

I install EVERYTHING to D drive and somehow my C drive is at the point where it's giving me warnings that C is running low on disk space.

I just installed Itunes to D drive and when I try to plug in my friend's Iphone it starts giving me shit about the C drive.


I'm not really sure how the hell I'm using up 43 gigs on my C drive and was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for me.

Also, yes the temp file folder is empty.

Right click C : propreties : Disk Cleanup and see how much space it can save you

less than a megabyte unless I want to disable hibernate (which i use often). Unless i can change hibernate to D drive? It's 3 gigs

Check to see how large your System Restore information is set for. It's not usually a whole lot, but it's possible that part of your space issues are due to that just expanding.

You -might- reclaim a gig or two by clearing out all the temp stuff with CCleaner or the like. Or almost nothing. Couldn't hurt to run and check.

Otherwise, seconding WinDirStat - it'll show you exactly what's taking up space.

Same for WinDirStat and I believe you can move both your hibernate.sys and pagefile.sys to the partition of your choice.

Great program. I was able to free some shit up.

Few things that are still huge though that I have no clue what are for (but I assume necessary since were on my pc from the start)

The folder winsxs is taking up 9.somethin gigs
recovery is 4.7 gigs (anyway i could just burn this to a disk and then get rid of it?)

Looks like windows recovery. Its in the windows oflder and its called RE_DRIVE (the subfolder) and all the recovery shit is in there. Def not HP/Dell, my laptop is MSI

You bought the PC with Windows installed, right? You didnt build it, and install your own OS?
That seperate folder/partition is just a convience thing. If you have the actual Windows CD, and know how to use it properly, you dont really need that folder.

It's a laptop and yes, windows was installed. I don't have a disk (they didn't give me one, but they gave me a blank disk, which i guess was to burn a back up?)

No idea. What most companys are doing these days are putting everything you need to do install with on that seperate drive so they can cheap out of physical disk.

It's problematic, id see if you can get an actual disk (or try burning it), and then you can get rid of it. Granted it makes some recoveries quite painless, in other cases it hurts more than helps.

I prefer SequoiaView, as it gives a very good visual guide to your disk usage, and color codes file types.
