videocard died? (nvidia)

When I booted up my computer today, I got all these weird lines and corruptions during boot up and shit. The lines stay on after entering windows and is a huge annoyance. The resolution is set to lowest possible(something like 800x600 or whatever). When I go to display settings I get some "unknown" crap where it should list my videocard. Anything short of buying a new card can fix this?

Only thing I can think of is reseating the video card and hoping for the best, as it sounds like she's going to be a goner soon if it's showing signs of corruption during post.

Just pray some dust or something is imparing the input, it sounds much more severe than drivers or resolution since it happens even on boot screens. Might be time for a new card.

All signs of a dying VC is there. Like Kaisha said, try reseating it (most cards simply refuse to boot if there is a problem regarding this, but worths trying I suppose).

How old, and what model is your nvidia by the way? http://news.softpedia.com/news/More-...ng-91890.shtml this nvidia screw up issue was very common (with more or less the same symptoms with yours) with nvidia cards and depending on the manufacturer (especially if it is a laptop) you might be able to get a replacement.

Umm... so I tried cleaning it out with a spraycan and huge piece of dust came out of the fan. Like a HUGE piece... and now it works. Fuck me! I suppose this is what happens when you leave your case open and use an outside fan. Too ghetto. I do this because the circulation is shitty in my case and overheats the card fast.

glad your problem is resolved, just please tell me u used a q-tip or something of that nature to hold down/stop the fan, as you can really damage the bearings and screw up the revolutions it is set on by spraying it directly and letting the fan spin. I'm sure you knew this, just making sure.

lol... my false alarm was a false alarm. The problem is back... so I guess I should just get a new card or maybe it is more dust in a hard to reach spot? Frustrating.

As a last resort after it's completely dead you could always try baking the card. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7jUqoKVY-k gives directions. I've done it multiple times for my Nvidia GeForce 7950 GTX Go. I'd have only had to do it once except it kept overheating til I went and found i8kfangui to control my laptop fans better. Been working for probably half a year since I last baked it without any problems.
