Computer has quick hangs in operation

    Gateway Laptop

    Gateway M-7315U
Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit
    Intel Pentium Duo T3200 2GHz
4GB Ram, not sure what kind
HDD has 2 partitions, both 111 GB, one has OS the other has just a few things on it.

Every couple seconds my computer will very briefly hang. It's most noticeable while watching videos as the video will hang but the audio stays the same. While typing the words will hang a quick seconds and then continue. I've been having intermittent problems with the computer completely freezing and requiring a hard reboot. Scandisk and other disc checking programs don't show any specific problems and the ones they do are able to be fixes. Running AVG doesn't pick up anything either.

It's not an old laptop either, just over a year old. Thanks for any help.

What do you mean by watching video? Via a media player or the internet? If so, what media player or browser are you using? A specific site?

it's not just watching a video, it's just more noticeable when i watch a video because the screen stops for a second then 'catches' back up to where it was supposed to be.

i use firefox, videos on youtube or anywhere else hang every so often.

Is it something that definitely occurs whether Firefox is open or not? The only thing that comes to mind with the kind of stuttering you're experiencing is a setting in Firefox where the session-saver update is set too low and causes that. Otherwise I guess I'd just say check the task manager to see which process is jumping as I'd guess the performance graphs are likely spiking when this happens as well.

If nothing comes of that or it's of no help, I guess I'd say try a spyware scan as well with something like MalwareBytes and then try HijackThis, though I'm not sure if there's anyone here that would/could check the log for you. If not there are plenty of forums that will do so.

Do you hear your harddrive spinning up during the delay?
