Kevin Feige on Upcoming Marvel Studios Films

SFX Magazine's March issue features an interview with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige in which he talks more about the studio's upcoming projects and makes one fairly big reveal.

Feige talked about how Iron Man, Iron Man 2 (May 7), Thor (May 6, 2011) and The First Avenger: Captain America (July 22, 2011) will lay the foundation for what should be the ultimate superhero epic - The Avengers (May 4, 2012).

"It's fun now, and we're introducing some new characters in ['Iron Man 2']," he told the magazine. "But it's not about just cramming in lots of new people; that's sort of the cardinal sin of the sequel - adding in too many characters. This is totally Tony Stark's story. And that's gonna weave into Thor's story, and Steve Rogers' story, and it's already ingrained with Nick Fury's story and an organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D."

He says that it is important to first focus on each character. "My only concern is that when we launch a franchise--whichever character's franchise that may be--it should stand on its own two feet... So by the time 'The Avengers' comes in 2012, it's not just a team superhero movie with a bunch of characters with powers. It's three people - four including the Hulk; five including Nick Fury - who you've seen before in other movies, coming together for the very first time."

Catch that Hulk bit? Feige also said that he won't rule out the possibility of a second Incredible Hulk film with Edward Norton. "That would be post-'Avengers,' if it happened... I think there's a chance. It's certainly our intention to use the same actors from film to film where we can."

Feige was asked it will be difficult to meld the fantasy of Thor with the high-tech science fiction in Iron Man and The Avengers. "No," he said, "because we're doing the Jack Kirby/Stan Lee/Walt Simonson/J. Michael Straczynski 'Thor.' We're not doing the blow-the-dust-off-of-the-old-Norse-book-in-your-library 'Thor.' And in the 'Thor' of the Marvel Universe, there's a race called the Asgardians. And we're linked through this Tree of Life that we're unaware of. It's real science, but we don't know about it yet. The 'Thor' movie is about teaching people that."

The magazine asked Feige what other characters may come to the big screen after The Avengers. "I love Doctor Strange. Ant-Man is like Whiplash - one of those chracters where you're like, 'Really?' that we've got a fun story with. I've always wanted to do something with Black Panther. I think what Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction have done with Iron Fist lately is great, and the Iron Fist mythology opens up a whole other part to us. I'd love to break into the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe even more- it's kind of there in 'Thor.' J.J. Abrams' 'Star Trek' got me jonesing to do that. It's what I grew up on - 'Star Trek' and 'Star Wars.' I want to do a big space epic. And we've got them in Marvel."

    Fox Developing Daredevil Reboot

In order to keep the movie rights to Marvel Comics' "Daredevil" under their belt, 20th Century Fox and New Regency are looking to develop a reboot of the sightless superhero with News Corp VP Peter Chernin producing and David Scarpa (The Day the Earth Stood Still) writing a script, according to Mike Fleming at Deadline Hollywood.

The original movie directed by Mark Steven Johnson and starring Ben Affleck in the title role (and his current wife Jennifer Garner as Elektra) was released almost exactly seven years ago and grossed $179.2 million worldwide.

This probably shouldn't come as too big a surprise as there has been talk of some sort of reboot ever since Disney bought Marvel last year, but this is the first confirmation that one is being actively developed.

Red Skull Confirmed as Captain America Villain

Joe Johnston, director of the forthcoming The First Avenger: Captain America, has been doing press all day out in Los Angeles for his new movie The Wolfman and ShockTillYouDrop.com Managing Editor Ryan Rotten had a chance to talk with Johnston about the movie and what to expect.

Johnston confirmed at the press conference that the Red Skull will indeed be the villain of the first movie and told Ryan later a bit more about why they decided to set the majority of the movie during WWII:

"Virtually the entire story except the bookends are in World War II because we all recognize we have one chance to tell the origin story of how he became Captain America, you can't tell a modern story and then go back and tell the origin story. If you're going to do it, let's do it. Let's do it first. Everyone wanted to tell an origin story. There was a version where it was a modern story and it didn't work."
Hopefully, we'll have more word on Johnston's plans for the movie and answers to some of the many questions that have been on your minds, including the all-important casting of Steve Rogers and what other characters may be appearing in the movie. Johnston did say at the press conference that they definitely are going for an American actor, preferably an unknown, and they hope to have that person by the end of February.

The First Avenger: Captain America is currently scheduled for release on July 22, 2011.

Marvel Studios to shoot 'Thor' in New Mexico

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Portions of Marvel Studios' motion picture, "Thor," will be filmed in the Santa Fe area. Gov. Bill Richardson's office said Tuesday

The studio is expected to hire more than 200 New Mexico residents for the cast and crew.

"Thor" is directed by Kenneth Branagh and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Rene Russo and Anthony Hopkins.

The film is slated for domestic release in May 2011.

The production is currently shooting in Los Angeles.

The governor's office says since Richardson took office in 2003, more than 135 film and television productions have been made in New Mexico.

Is Marvel Moving Forward with Ant-Man?

While Marvel Studios is moving full steam ahead with Kenneth Branagh's Thor and Joe Johnston has been all over the place talking about his The First Avenger: Captain America this past weekend, there's still one very elusive missing piece to the Avengers puzzle, and that would be... Ant-Man!

A movie about the diminutive Avenger, Dr. Hank Pym, who is in fact one of the charter members of the team, has been in the works for some time. In fact, Edgar Wright was on hand at that very same Marvel Studios Comic-Con panel back in 2006 when Jon Favreau and Louis Letterier were first talking about their upcoming projects Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. (You can read our interview from those times here.)

When Disney bought Marvel, there were some rumors Pixar might take over the project, but those were swiftly denied by John Lasseter, so that puts Ant-Man back into Wright's hands, having developed the project with Joe Cornish quite a bit before shifting his focus to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Apparently, Stan "The Man" Lee, the co-creator of Ant-Man, met with Wright for lunch today, something that Lee proudly recapped on his Twitter feed with two intriguing tweets:

To make up for my previous grievous error, here's a little item that may have escaped you. Marvel is prepping a movie starring-- Ant Man!

    and

I had lunch with the cool, young director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) and, as you'd imagine, we had fun discussing the tiny hero

Now of course, it could just be a coincidence that they were having lunch and talking about Ant-Man, but Lee stating that Marvel is prepping the movie seems to indicate they're finally moving forward now that Wright is putting the finishing touches on Scott Pilgrim.

Here's hoping Stan Lee isn't being the tease we've known him to be since he started writing Stan's Soap Box.

    Johnston Talks Captain America Costume

On Saturday, we got a chance to talk to The First Avenger: Captain America director Joe Johnston about the anticipated film (you can read that here) and the Los Angeles Times got some more costume, story and casting details from the helmer (Spoilers ahead!).

"The costume is a flag, but the way we're getting around that is we have Steve Rogers forced into the USO circuit," Johnston said. "After he's made into this super-soldier, they decide they can't send him into combat and risk him getting killed. He's the only one and they can't make more. So they say, 'You're going to be in this USO show' and they give him a flag suit. He can't wait to get out of it."

He added that "When he does go AWOL, he covers up the suit but then, after a few things happen, he realizes that this uniform allows him to lead. By then, he's become a star in the public mind and a symbol. The guys get behind him because he embodies something special."

Which leads to a new costume: "In the first USO sequences, the frustrated patriot will be wearing a version that is closer to the classic Jack Kirby-designed costume, but then later as the super-soldier hits the war zone he will be wearing a sturdier, more muted version that he makes himself that is more like battle togs. The stripes across his mid-section, for instance, will be straps, not colored fabric."

Thor to Film at Del Mar Beach

In addition to shooting at Raleigh Manhattan Beach Studios and in the Santa Fe area, the Del Mar Times reports that Marvel Studios will shoot Thor at Del Mar beach as well:

The Marvel comic book hero Thor may soon have some powerful new sidekicks: The Del Mar City Council.

Paramount Pictures will enter into negotiations with Del Mar to film a beach scene for its new movie "Thor," set for release in 2011. Paramount wants to use a 300-yard stretch of Del Mar beach for a scene involving six horses running down the terrain.

"I look forward to seeing our shining sea on the big screen with Thor thundering by on his great steed," Earnest said. "I think that's going to be fun."

According to a city staff report, Paramount says this coastline is ideal because its gradual slope of sand down to the waterline creates excellent reflection opportunities on film.

The city foresees a "very positive" economic impact from the production, but has no basis for negotiating with major motion picture studios. It will work with Paramount to come up with a deal for filming, scheduled preliminarily for April 29.

The Kenneth Branagh-directed film will hit theaters on May 6, 2011.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - John Krasinski as Captain America?

    http://d.yimg.com/a/i/mo/news_johnkrasinski400.jpg

It could happen as Marvel conducts screen tests this week in its search for the actor to play Steve Rogers, the alter ego of the title character in its "Captain America" movie.

The company's latest superhero movie is being directed by Joe Johnston ("Wolfman") and tells the story of the young infirm man rejected from enlisting who becomes America's symbol of liberty during World War II and eventually a member of Marvel's superhero team the Avengers.

About seven actors have moved to the front of the super soldier serum testing line and have either tested or are expected to screen test this week and next at Marvel's Manhattan Beach, Calif., headquarters.

Those known to be on the list with Krasinski include Michael Cassidyhttp://www.smallville-cz.com/img/michael-cassidy-1.jpg (who appeared in "Smallvile" and who tested for the Superman movie when McG was going to direct it), Patrick Flueger
http://images.buddytv.com/battleImag...patflueger.jpg (one of the stars of " The 4400 " who most recently appeared in the Tobey Maguire movie " Brothers "), Scott Porterhttp://cinemaverytasty.com/wp-conten...ott-porter.jpg (TV's " Friday Night Lights "), Wilson Bethel http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2042/...eeac2e0862.jpg (" Generation Kill") and Mike Vogelhttp://beingz.files.wordpress.com/20...ke-vogel36.jpg(" Cloverfield ").

Chace Crawfordhttp://farm4.static.flickr.com/3594/...1b6e52a47a.jpg is also in talks to screen test, though no deal has been made.

Garret Hedlund, already starring in Disney's "Tron," was also on the list to test but has fallen off, at least for now, because of scheduling conflicts. Insiders say he may still make the testing round. Jensen Ackles is another actor who had scheduling conflicts.

The studio has put the actors on 30-day holds during the testing process.

Sources on both sides caution that an actor may not be found from the tests, which happened during Marvel's search for the man who would be "Thor." For that movie, currently shooting in Manhattan Beach, the studio conducted several rounds of testing but found its star, Chris Hemsworth, late in the game, after initially passing on his audition reel.

While Marvel is looking for someone on the youngish side and who can play rugged, one key ingredient emerging is that the actor be American, according to insiders. So far, no British or Australian actors have been seriously considered though the search could widen if no suitable candidates are found.

Jim as Capt. America? meh I dunno.... I personally like the FNL guy and the Cloverfield guy.

I'm pretty psyched about the Captain movie, always been one of my favs. I was reading around and found an article saying that Jeremy Renner (Hurt Locker, SWAT) is rumored to play Hawkeye in The Avengers movie:
