Ooh, thanks. I'm on the 3rd crystarium since I haven't played the game much yet. I figure I'll just incorporate this from here on out. I mostly did the large COMs for Noel and RAVs for Serah so far anyays.

This is one of the many roads to Rome. Not sure why you needed this when the rules of thumb in the original gamefaqs post were much easier to keep track of and give the same end result. Could have copy-pasted a version of this from the official guide if you were waiting for a list like this.

This varies from the other posts slightly, and the official guide is incorrect. This one has been statistically proven.
Plus it's straight forward and easy to read compared.

Oh lol is the one in the guide incoorect? I didn't follow it but the only thing I noticed was that they used 2 large nodes for HP on Serah instead of STR. I still don't see how this easier than keeping track of uneven and even levels for 2 of the 6 jobs, 2 jobs small nodes, either Rav or Com as 5th job pending Serah or Noel and the 6th jobs to fill up the blanks after that, but whatever works for you.

Doesn't make sense to use 2 large nodes on HP if he did then the guide sucks, not going to look through that shit to see if he actually did.

The way these were generated were by following the large node rule, so yes if you are not retarded and just use that you won't miss the maximum MAG/STR for Serah and Noel.

    This is unnecessary.

Iirc it were the last 2 large nodes for Serah in the book that they did it with and the Piggyback people could have used them for 4 STR instead of 12 HP. I didn't give it much thought since 4 STR is as useless to Serah as 12 HP and considering I already found it easier to follow a few rules than reading an entire list every time I use the crystarium I didn't care. Wondering what else they did wrong with the level up method in the book though, can't be just this.

Yeah, theoretically +STR on Serah will help when she alternates between physical and magical Ravager spells.

I posted this on GameFAQs, it might help you out.

Now let's list the things we know. There are 197 total available large nodes that award the following bonuses:
    - COM: Str+2
    - RAV: Mag+2
    - MED: HP+6
    - SEN: HP+6
    - SYN: HP+6 (when leveling to an even number), Mag+2 (when leveling to an odd number)
    - SAB: Str+2 (when leveling to an even number), Mag+2 (when leveling to an odd number)

The number 197 itself is significant because that means you can essentially restrict the bonuses you generate to about only two roles if you wish.

Somewhere down the line the Crystarium for both characters also kind of "opens up", meaning the abundance of small nodes will increase in comparison to large nodes as you progress through the character's development.

The problem with optimizing for Strength in particular is that there are only 97 possible bonuses available from COM (as both characters begin at COM level 2) and 48 possible bonuses available from SAB when coming an even level. No other role grants increases to Strength. That leaves about 50ish nodes that cannot generate Strength, leaving either HP or Magic.

Optimizing Magic doesn't have the same restrictions, really. Instead of just two sources for Magic, there are three: RAV, SYN (odd) and SAB (odd). This meets the 196 node requirement for optimizing Magic. The last node can go to Strength.

My current plan is to optimize Noel on Strength and Serah on Magic. Serah's Magic can be optimized through careful finesse of the Crystarium, so no problems there. Noel, if I'm correct, should be just as clear-cut, because if I can't use all 197 nodes for Strength, I can use the remainder for Magic bonuses - meaning I can optimize him by going COM and SAB exclusively on his large nodes.
Generally, the idea works like this:

    - When starting out, use your favored role on large nodes and burn SEN levels on small nodes.
    - Unlock SYN, SAB and MED as soon as possible. Start using MED to fill in small nodes as well. Prioritize filling small nodes with SEN or MED for characters depending on your effective Paradigm Packs.
    - Keeping working on favored role for large nodes until you get all abilities for that role (minus the full ATB ones). Abilities generally cap at 60 for COM and RAV.
    - Next start working your Crystarium bonuses through SAB and SYN. Again, prioritize useful abilities (e.g. Serah should be burning thru Saboteur levels before Synergist levels).
    - Since getting all large nodes for Strength is impossible due to the limited sources of Strength through role bonuses, a Strength build is going to need to include Magic sometime to be optimal assuming HP isn't your goal. Saboteur is the go-to role for this - spend large nodes on Saboteur exclusively until its capped after getting COM to 60.
    - Optimizing Magic requires more careful attention to the system so you don't accidentally use an odd SYN or SAB level on a large node. Get RAV to 60 first, then use small nodes to eliminate even levels between each odd you put on SYN and SAB.
    - Overall, always leave a few COM and RAV levels for last when you cap out the Crystarium. There are large nodes at the end and you'll want to prioritize according to your build for that character.

    TL;DR:
A Str build for Noel should be consisting of COM and SAB almost exclusively.
A Mag build for Serah should be consisting of a bit of RAV, followed up by careful attention to SYN and SAB odd levels. You don't need a chart for all this.

i used the official guide as an outline and mostly winged it slowly. as long as the final numbers match up and i put SAB/SYN in the the proper odd/even placing I was happy.

there is one typo for Noel in the official guide where the table lists them putting in 1 more level than possible for that crystarium level. but thats about it. if your role levels don't tally then it boils down to how you arranged your syn/sab levels, because sometimes you cannot start the crystarium tier with it because the first node is big and your syn happens to be even next level, etc.

i wasn't really aiming for a 100% min/max but if its anything better than wasting large nodes of HP when i can throw it into STR and MAG i'm already happy.

I'm honestly curious how much this really matters and/or makes a tangible difference in the long-run. From what I have heard, you'll eventually get to a point where you can 5-star everything as you get close to maxing your characters out regardless of how you prioritized your small/large nodes.

Matters only for min/maxing people really.

And if you're controlling Serah and alternating spells and strikes with a MAG build you're doing it wrong. Not only is her damage much higher with spells in general but the animations are also a lot quicker.
My Serah with equipment has like 1200 MAG compared to 400ish STR. The difference is huge.
The only build that makes a difference is a pure STR build because you will end up with a lot of big nodes that you can't fill with STR bonuses because your SAB and COM roles are already capped.
Either way Serah is a really good character and can benefit from either build. She's way better than Noel in any offensive role.

I don't see why we need a thread for every single idea somebody has. This was mentioned on page 2 of the other thread is a MUCH MUCH easier to understand way. all you did was copy/paste somebody else convoluted shit instead of trying to make it easier to understand. What you typed is one long string of nothing. somebody looking at that will be way more confused than anything else

from page 2 of post-game discussion:

Level MED/SEN on small nodes only. Also use small nodes to set up the following possibilities for the large nodes.

When to use a large node:
    *As Serah*
    -To level Ravager
-To level SAB if current SAB level is even.
-To level SYN if current SYN level is even.
-To level Commando (if none of the above are possible)

    *As Noel*
    -To level Commando
-To level SAB if current SAB level is odd
-To level SYN if current SYN level is even
-To level Ravager (if none of the above are possible)
Now tell me. is what OP posted easier to understand or is what was alrdy posted easier to understand? you also don't need tio scroll down endlessly to see a stupid string of text that means nothing on its own and it explains nothing

I read over the original way of even/odd thing atleast 5 times and couldnt understand it because it was worded so horribly.
The old way is not for visual learners.

The way that's posted in this thread has it pointed out step-by-step and can be easily followed by anyone.
How youre not able to understand it is baffling to me, because it's listed out in a complete manner. But I suppose you arent driven by visual learning.

    It's pretty simple:

    Serah 1:
    Sen 1 (S)
    Rav 2 (L)
    Sen 2 (S)
    Rav 3 (L)
    Com 2 (S)
    Rav 4 (L)
    Com 3 (S)
    Rav 5 (L)
    Com 4 (S)
    Rav 6 (L)
    Com 5 (S)
    Com 6 (S)
    Rav 7 (L)
    Com 7 (S)
    Rav 8 (L)
    Com 8 (S)
    Rav 9 (L)

Serah's first level has 17 nodes, 8 Large and 9 Small, and on this level you will be using COM, RAV, and SEN.

SEN1, RAV2, etc, are the levels of those jobs when reaching the node. So in this example your RAV should be lvl9 upon reaching the final L node which will make it RAV10 afterwards.

But even then, thats over thinking it.
Simply go through the level in the order listed: SEN, RAV, SEN, RAV, COM, etc.

This is listed so you dont even have to think about it, all you have to do is go through the level and upgrade the jobs in the correct listed order.

that post is clearly wrong because there are only 197 big nodes and you have 2 roles to exploit, one being rav/com and the other is sab/syn. however because sab/syn work on a odd/even thing, you will need twice as many levels on those things to cover 99 nodes. that said. it means serah will never need to touch COM on big nodes and Noel RAV.

Serah benefits more because theres more +MAG out there than theres +STR.
also, magic is disproportionately more powerful than melee attacks in FFXIII (and XIII-2). because magic spells don't miss and don't require run animation, they can be fired off a lot quicker and will generally prove better than melee. speed is the name of the game really.

anyway, with the min/maxing in place, it allows you to choose weaker weapons and compensate for the drop in atk/mag than if you didn't min/max. granted theres probably nothing you can't 5-star without doing this, you will still be able to kill faster, which is an advantage.

Thanks, I didn't think of this, yet somehow I did it anyway, at least since yesterday. I got SYN to level 50 or so with the large node method on Noel. Meaning I already used like half of the large nodes I could use on magic. So good thing I stopped, going to finish STR first lol.

You obviously aren't paying attention to the way the game works because she does alternate between physical and magical spells when the weakness is known for enemies.

That's also the point where I start to manual attacks if I care enough for the extra damage from the magic spells instead of the enspell strikes inbetween.
