PS3 HD upgrade

So I decided to buy another PS3 after having a recent one YLOD. The only one available in my area ended up being a 40GB. Already I'm getting tired of the lack of space. Having gone to several different websites only to hear tech noobs bitch about how hard the screws are to remove, or to have to try to read a post from someone who wouldn't know what punctuation was if it hit them in the face, I decided to come here. I have two questions:

1: How big of an HD can the PS3 recognize? I've read about people wanting to use up to 1TB using an 3.5in externally, but I want something that's going to fit into the PS3. If I drop a 2.5in 750GB HD into the thing, is it going to tell me to go fuck myself?

2: Having shopped for HDs only once before to repair a failing Frankenbuild, what's the most reliable name when it comes to HDs? I had a friend tell me to either get a Western Digital or Seagate, but I'm a fan of second opinions. I don't want to drop money only to have the thing explode a year and a half to two years down the line.

The 750GB seems more likely to fit, but I tend to eat space like none other, so the larger the better. To those that have upgraded their PS3's HD, what brand did you use? Or what do you recommend?

I believe the ps3 doesn't support anything internal above 500gigs. Then again someone could correct me if I'm wrong.

1. If you going internal, you'll need 2 1/2 inch sata, 5400 rpm, 500 gigabytes or less.
2. I upgraded mine to a 320 GB Western Digital.

Seagate is a perfectly cromulant company as long as you stay below the 1TB mark.

def wrong, i can confirm 640gb drives work, so I don't see why 750 wouldn't work.

i stuck with seagate as the stock ps3 hard drive is a seagate. but it really doesn't matter as long as it fits.

your friend is right, seagate and WD are both good companies and offer great warranties. (5 years on most of them, last i checked?)

as for the 2 you listed, the first one will not fit, the second one will. the reason? the height. PS3 will only take 9.5mm height, the 1tb you listed is 12.5mm. second should work perfectly fine.

Alright. Much appreciated. I've had too much conflicting info lately. Glad to hear something different from the standard. I almost went and ordered a 500GB HD. Patience is key, etc.

Gonna put in an order for the second one. I don't really feel like trying to find a 9.5mm height 1TB HD, if they even exist.

Do NOT put a 7200 RPM HDD into your PS3, I did this on my old one. The PS3 is built for 5400 RPM drives and it apparently couldn't handle the extra heat from a faster drive and it overheated.

For brands, I've always trusted Seagate when it comes to 2.5inch drives.

i've been using a 7200rpm drive for over a year, while it doesn't utilize the higher speed the heat shouldn't be an issue at all
