iPhone advice: to wait for 4g or not to wait

The setup: My 3G is crapping out (home button/mute switch suck, lock/power button doesn't work anymore). I didn't get the extended warranty.

My wife and I have a joint plan on ATT. I've got a lot invested in iPhone apps. Thus, don't have the time or motivation to switch to Verizon.

Given that OS 4 isn't going to be fully usable on 3G, I think I've got 2 options.

1) Go for 3GS ASAP
2) Wait for 4G that might get released this summer

Thoughts?

To be honest, the whole iPhone crapping out has turned me off a bit on iPhone, but switching to Verizon and losing all my iPhone apps (including both FFs which I have yet to play!) is a bit depressing... that's why I figure I've got to still with it, at least for one more generation

If you really dont want to change hit up 3GS, if you dont mind changing look into getting a Ipod touch and getting a android phone, its your call and what you like. I will forever be with google phones I think now. I would not stay with something you dont like tho just because you have like $40 in apps.

If google screwed me over, I would change to a new one eve tho I have apps.

I'm in the same boat as you to a point as I have a 3G, but it still functions fine. Personally, I'm waiting until Apple unveils it's 4th gen phone before I upgrade again. I'm either going to be convinced that the new model is worth the price tag they put on it, or I will be able to reap the benefits of a likely pricecut on the 3GS model.

There have also been rumors floating around that Verizon might get some iPhone models with the top of the line being reserved for AT&T, so that might give you something else to think about.

I'd wait for 4th generation. There is honestly not much point in shelling out money on iPod touch if you are planning to buy a phone in near future.

3GS is a stunning phone but you wouldn't want to regret in case 4th generation becomes something too good to say no.

Wait for the 4thGen. Odds are it's gonna be using the A4 processor of the iPad. (And understand iPad uses the same amount of memory as 3Gs) And the A4, on that same memory, has been shown the benchmark a 50% improvement over 3Gs. And the one compliment everyone has given the iPad has been "it's fast as hell."

So expect the 4thGen iPhone to just blister over the previous iPhones.

One of the things people overlooked is that the original iphone's price was cut $200 a little over 2 months after its release...

Thanks guys. The only thing that sucks is that since my 3G is crapping out, I've got to make it 2(?) months until the 4G. The main problem is that my lock button doesn't work (the others are surviving OK for now), but when the phone does lock up, for some reason it just turns itself on and off. I'm trying now with a "never lock" setting to see if that keeps it usable.

Wait for the next phone... It's a bitch to wait considering the problems you are having, but it's going to be a pretty decent upgrade over what you currently have and over what else is on the market currently.

pick up a refurb phone, friend at work got one w/out a contract for $50 for the 3G.
$50 will save you from stabbing your eyes out, let you keep your apps/contacts, and not make you cringe at buying 4th gen.

All indications point that the 4thGen will be the biggest jump yet over previous models.

My upgrade time is available in Aug, so that will be nice for me. Initial rush of the new model should be done, and all the bugs worked out
