Great Places to Eat in Quebec City & Montréal

My family (a bunch of American in-laws) is travelling to Québec City and Montréal for a couple of weeks at the end of May. We need some good suggestions for restaurants.

In Québec City we'll be staying in Upper Town, near Château Frontenac. We'll be there for three nights. We'll be in Montréal for a week so have more nights to try different things. We'll be staying near the Papineau metro station.

The favourite types of food for our group are Italian and Indian, but we'd like to try some authentic Québécois (or French I suppose) cuisine. My in-laws like "ethnic" food, so something interesting and different would be great. I guess I'll eat the dinner rolls.

Also, where do you get the best poutine in Montréal?

not sure for indian or italian food, but for poutine you definitely gotta try Resto La Banquise located at 994 Rachel.

Alright, this is right up my alley. I live in Montreal so that's the only place I'll cover.

For poutine I suggest you look into La Banquise, its on Rachel street. They have many different types of poutine, but I recommend you get a regular one if it's your first time having one. It has the reputation of having the best poutine in Montreal, its also open 24H.

For italian food, I recomment going to Little Italy, obviously. I know of two restaurants there. First is Napolitana, said to have the best italian pizza. Second is Three Mary's, good overall home-made italian food.

For Indian food, I've been to a place called Bombai Palace (I think) on St-Denis. This was like 5 years back though. Nowadays, I often go to a place called Malhi, its a very ghetto-ish and small place but the food is awesome. That's located in the Parc Extension area, on Jarry street.

Other restaurants I recommend are Marven's, cheap greek food, its on Ball street, best calamari in the city in my opinion, ask for their special sauce. Baton rouge has the best ribs in town, gotta go there as well, there are quite a few around the city. Check out Daou restaurant for amazing Lebanese food. The Keg has amazing filet mignon and cool ambiance if you go to the one in the old port.

Honestly, there are so many great restaurants in Montreal its hard to name even one tenth of them, hopefully I've helped a bit, feel free to ask questions if need be and I'll answer them to the best of my knowledge.

Thank you for all the help! Really looking forward to this trip. I've been to Montréal several times now for various reasons, but I never really planned/researched much in terms of dining so I always ended up in fast food or other ridiculous choices.

Definitely going to try that poutine place on Rachel! The other suggestions look great too, so I'll add several of them to our itinerary.

That and for Quebec city just wander around Grande Allee.

Also, you can't go wrong with Le Cosmos Café.

Um, the smoked meat Deli he mentionned isnt the one that's world renowned... sorry.

You need to check out Schwartzs, that's the one, but be aware that you WILL wait in line, and that the tables inside are all ridiculously close to one another, but that's all part of the charm of the place.

This. I normally go up to Montréal ~once/year, and always make sure to go to La Banquise. There was a deli type place I went to in '98 in old town, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called, nor can I remember exactly where it was.

Sorry even though La Banquise is pretty good, the best poutine in Québec is Ashton in Québec city. La banquise is also good though.

Also, if you like small craft breweries, then you need to check out Brewtopia on crescent St. Their beer is so tasty, their flavors are out of this world.

There is also "real bagel" where you can get awesome bagels that they make inside the shop. I prefer Montreal style bagels to New York style. http://www.realbagel.com/

For Bagels, I would recommend St-Viateur Bagels, if I'm not mistaken they were voted "Best bagels in Canada" last year.

The Ashton idea is perfect. I was looking for another meal for Québec City and there's one near our hotel. Thank you very much.

I'm wondering, are there good bakeries in Montréal and Québec City? When I was in Paris there were excellent bakeries with delicious croissants everywheres. My husband will love the bagel shop, as he loves bagels.

More Quebeckers around than I woulda thought!

Well, I approve of all that's been said aboot Montreal and Ashton is the only restaurant I know in Quebec city. Just don't try a poutine from a shitty place and then say they all taste bad because that'd be like comparing a big mac to a real gourmet burger.

If your travels bring you near the bottom of the barrel place that is côte-des-neiges/côte-ste-catherine (really close to 'Universite de Montreal, subway station is côte-des-neiges) there's that magnificient Irish pub called McCarold, place is usually packed especially during the weekends or during a Habs game but the food is goddamn delicious and they serve top notch beer.

Yay my hometown anyways,
Schawrtz is great but, but it might not please everyone's taste.
If you guys want a awesome unique place to eat, I highly suggest Le Jardin Nelson, they have crepes and such on, but its a Open roof resto, its at the Old Port on the main entertainment street.
For Indian near Atwater there was a buffet(or a la carte if you want, I think it was bombay palace), which is decently priced, if you want to spend a bit more goto Guy Concordia on St-Catherine, and you there will be one called L'etoile D'inde,better, but a bit expensive for Indian imo.
Also Check out Mcgill Pizza, its a run down spot, but its a GREAT pizza with all the greesy goodness!

Anyways you should also check out the Bagels as someone mentioned!
Beaver Tail you can get them at old port too, Used to be in La ronde only, but that was a long time ago.
