Building a new Rig, recommendations encouraged.

Hi everyone, I'm building a new rig for a gamer buddy of mine and our budget is down to 1000 (give or take a a couple of 100's).

After some digging we came up with the following (please note incomplete)

    Mobo:
    EVGA 141-BL-E757-TR LGA 1366 Intel X58

    Proc:
    Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor

    Memory:
    2x GeIL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
(yes 12 gigs, he wants to be prepared for anything memory intensive)

    Video:
    MSI N240GT-MD1G/D5 GeForce GT 240 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card

    PSU:
CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

    Hard Drive:
    3x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

    Notes:
I know we're missing (non stock) cooling, we might be recycling his old case (haven't decided yet) and planning on migrating all his stuff from his old HD into the new ones.

The end user is a gamer (ex ffxi, currently Aion, maybe ffxiv or blade and soul), sometimes video editor and constantly doing some light photoshoping.

Critiques and recommendations are welcome, planning on building the new rig no later than mid-late June.

    Thanks in advance.

i7 930 costs like 10 more dollars and I believe is the norm.

12GB RAM confuses me... but to each his own.

However the graphic card is a major waste of potential. 470/480 go.

edit: didn't see budget... seriously drop the ram and get a real graphic card

    I'd definitely go with a 470 if you are on a budget...but a GTS240 would be terrible. GTX260 or 275 at least.

Just checked, if you drop one of the 2 sets of RAM, get a i7 930 and only get one of the HDD (he probably won't need all 3 at start... it can wait until he get more money)

You get to around 800$, assuming a budget of 1k it can get you a pretty good card, if you can go up to 1.1k you can definitly get a 5850 or a 470.

I'm sure someone will drop by with the microcenter deal thing, they sell i7 for 100$ cheaper so that can get you a very good graphic card for 1k exactly.

The GPU is going to make a potentially nice build, awful. Just stick with 6GB of RAM and get a better card (I'd recommend some things but...anything is really better than that)

$25 more for a step up. idk how much you plan on spending on a card.
    i'd go for a 470 if i were doing a 1k budget rig tho.

PS: how do you change the link from the url to w/e you want it to read as?

I suggest this Memory if you like flashing led lights, available in 4 colors. Crucial Balistix Tracer DDR3 1600 2GB x 3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...3%20x%202GB%29 This will be better than the Adata Memory.

For the video card, get a Nvidia GTX 470/480 or ATI 5850/5870. With that budget definately don't get anything less than a 5850.

I don't really like Seagate Hard Drives. Go with a Western Digital Caviar Black for sure as they're extremely reliable.

Everything else you picked out is good.

To save money on your computer system you can drop down to an Intel I5 750 Processor, Dual Channel (2 sticks) of Memory such as: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2%20x%202GB%29, and an 1156 socket motherboard.

For the AMD route, Phenom II x4 955 Processor, Dual Channel (2 sticks) of memory, and an 890FX Chipset motherboard. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...rboard&x=0&y=0 There's cheaper motherboards that can be used to.

No matter which route you go, all of these computer systems will be more than enough to suit your every need.

@Kingeric After inserting a link you'll see how the actual link is inserted twice. Erase the lower link and put your text there, it should be lighted blue after inserting the link. Like This.

Like people are saying, just stick with 6gb of ram, you can easily add more later as needed. The 240 won't do aion justice, need at least a 260, but should go higher if you can now, if they don't want to upgrade later. I also prefer western digital to seagate for harddrives

If you're going to get a DX10 card try to get a 4890, you can get one for around $160.00

Why do people get such huge HDD's and so many. Every laptop/desktop on the market I see at bestbuy or in ads is like...

    1.3GHZ PENTIUM 3! 1GB RAM! 512kb GPU!!!! 5, YES 5, 1TB HDD'S! 5TB OF STORAGE BUY ME

    Seriously.

I am having trouble using up my 150gb raptor with OS + all programs and games on it, have only used like 1/6th of my storage drive which is like 640gb and only music/movies on it. Maybe I'm out of the loop and it's the cool thing to do to have millions of gigs of useless data and shit on my computer.

I'm part of the crowd that, whenever my computer starts to run a little slow, or does something funny, I reformat. Gotta love how well it runs from that fresh start, getting rid of all the bullshit I had on there and forgot about.

I'm a bit of both worlds lol, when things slow down/unsolvable problems, I format. I also have hundreds of gigs of tv shows that I watch lol. I should delete or burn them for storage, but meh.

Not counting the weeks on campus when I couldn't use it; I've had my computer for like a month or two. I've got 549/931 gb free and that's only because I've been conservative. I could easily fill it up in a month via torrents.

As for the original topic: Gonna repeat what everyone else is saying. Drop down to 6gb and get a 470 or a 5850. Starting with 1tb is good enough, you can buy more later when you need it and it'll probably cost less.

Really? My steam apps folder is over 150gb.. and bluray movie rips are 10gb compressed. It's easy to fill a lot of space.

As for reformatting, just store all your media files on a separate big-ass drive and don't reformat that one. Keep your OS/programs on a small fast drive. Preferably an SSD, but they're still a bit expensive and still don't use SATA3, so you might wanna wait a bit longer for that.

3TB is excessive for a budget build, though... does he really need that much storage right now? Can't just get 1 and add more later? Those Seagate drives are also massively unreliable. Stick with WD or Samsung.

i am the person he is building the pc for, i require de 3 HD's
    atm i have 2 externals(750gb and 1 TB, 750gb full)
internal 750gb(anime i havent seen) 500GB(prons) and 300gb(os misc tv shows and games)
and anime and prons are always at movement when it becomes close to get full i put it to the extenal but since i cant see more fast than i download i start getting a lot of stops of downloading.

now yes its been decided to drop 6GB i will get a better card and upgrade the i7 for 25 more bucks to the next tier to 2.8 i am doing this big spend (1k is a lot for me) since i wont buy a new pc in like 5 years(at least) only reapir and upgrade some little things
    with time and more money.

also any recomendation on the cooling?

Can you go higher on the $1,000 dollar budget? Also, do you need windows 7 64bit along with a better case?

    Mainboard: $165.00 after rebate.
    Processor: $289.00
    Ram: $150.00
    3 x 1TB Hard Drives: $300.00
    Video Card: $300.00
    Operating System: $100.00
    Case: $100.00
    Power Supply: $90.00 after rebate.
Heatsink: $40-$70.00 As for a recomendation, the Thermalright True 120 extreme or Thermalright Venemous X.

Compromises will likely need to be made somewhere if a thousand dollars is all we have to work with.
