Problems waking Lenovo thinkpad from sleep

So, awhile back I wiped my Lenovo X61s and installed Vista Ultimate. Recently, any time I shut the laptop, the screen goes black, but it doesn't appear to be sleeping. Unfortunately, the screen never wakes up, and I have to force restart the laptop. Anyone know what's going on, and how I can fix it? I'd prefer the laptop to sleep when shut, but I'd settle for the monitor not going off.

I have a ThinkPad W500 that's been doing the same thing on 7 Professional. Only way I've been able to fix it is to close it again, wait 'til it beeps then reopen it.

Try going into power options/edit plan settings/advanced settings and put turn off hardisk to never and disable hybrid sleep. After doing this my laptop would freeze after sleep and i was able to wake it up.
