    Stolen Ipod, any options?

I'll try to make this as short as possible. Basically, my fiancee had her ipod stolen from her desk at work today. It is not a new ipod, I could care less about the monetary value of it. This was the first Christmas present I gave her almost 5 years ago. I'm pretty sure she has the original box and serial number.

Is there anything that can be done? Along the lines of tracking it down through serial number... Possibly a location or anything of the sort?

This is the kind of ipod it was. Like I said, don't care about the cost of replacing or even that an ipod was stolen. It's that it was an important gift.

    Thanks in advance.

Unless you installed GadgetTrak on the thing, no.

Edit: And even then, its rare to get it back.

I've unfortunately had to experience this once myself when I was still in highschool. And sadly there isn't really much you can do besides report it being stolen to the police and/or the Office where she works. iPods are stolen all the time and it's pretty easy to get away with because of a lack of security on the devices makes it easy to wipe them and sell. Although I would keep the box with the serial # on it because if you ever do catch the person you'll be able to prove the iPod is yours.

Thanks for the responses. This is pretty much what I figured. If BG says no, it's probably no.

I imagine she could file a police report and you supply the police with the serial #, but 99.99999% sure nothing will ever come of it unless the thief pawns it and pawn shops in your area run serial numbers on small electronics.

make the best of a shitty situation, buy a new one, load it with all her music, put "your" song on it plugged into PC speakers and surprise her with it playing when she gets home or something.

Like another said, report it to the police with the model/serial number.

Maybe you could get lucky, and the thief pawns it shortly before the police department do a sweep of local pawn shops. In which if it pops up in a police report as stolen, they would retrieve it from you from the pawn shop.

However, police departments doing sweeps of pawn shops is really uncommon.

You could report it stolen, and go into pawn shops on your own looking for it. If you find it, leave it there and tell the police about it and they can retrieve it and investigate the pawn shop.

Secretly ally a co-worker to send out an email suggesting interest in buying the same/similar ipod to everyone in the office. If someone comes forward, begin serial number comparison.

Chances are, something like that's the only way the thief would bring the ipod to any place where you'd see it again.

And if you do actually do this, make sure it's not her sending out the email because that would be too suspicious if the thief has half a brain.
