    Windows 7 Aero question

Encountering an intermittent problem where Aero seems to disable itself for no logical reason. My system resources are always fine so not sure why it's doing it. Is there a way to force Aero from never doing this, or atleast force it to turn back on? It usually eventually turns itself back on but it's annoying. Google search is failing me so thought I'd come see what BG had to say.

Are you playing any games or other versions of programs that have to use the compatibility functions? I know when i played X-men origins video game it would change the aero style out while i had the game running.

I don't run anything in compatibility mode as far as I know.

I have this issue as well. Aero always seems to crash 2 minutes after my PC boots. Probably because I didn't reinstall Windows after my Mother Board broke. I came up with a temporary fix by going to Start > Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services. Find 'Desktop Windows Manager Session Manager', open it's properties and go to the Recovery tab. Choose 'Restart the Service' for every recovery option and set 'Restart Service After' to zero minutes. This will force Aero to restart itself as soon as it fails. I wish I had a permanent fix for this, but it's better then manually restarting it every time it shuts off.

Check that windows experience thingy isn't running via task scheduler.

It will disable Aero while it is running.

Thanks, this is along the lines of what I was looking for. I will try it out and see what happens.

Some times it seemed like Itunes disabled Aero... but it seems I can not intentionally reproduce it. Get a message like "a program is requiring aero etc be disabled"

I know Aero turns off if you run older things. Original UT or fullscreen Diablo II turns mine off but it always turns back on when the game closes.

Are you using any custom visual styles? I've run into that problem with them before, but generally windows shows an error with Aero or WDM in the "Personalize" menu from the destkop>rightclick

Try upgrading videocard drivers? Or peek into the event log to see what's happening.

No custom visual style other than changing the wallpaper and windows color from their default values.

Videocard drivers are the most recent Nvidia release. Next time it happens (it happens maybe once every few months) I'll check event viewer.
