New research at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Center seeks to turn the human body into a genetically engineered cancer-killing machine. The fact that the human body doesn't see cancer as a threat to be destroyed naturally is part of what makes treating it so difficult, so this research uses a harmless, HIV-like virus as the vehicle to carry T-cells (which fight disease) to lymphocytes, and simultaneously carry a reporter gene, which show up in positron emission tomography (PET) scanning, as you can see in the photographs above.

So far the researchers have injected the cells into the bloodstreams of melanoma-infected mice, and they began to see evidence of their work within two or three days, and by ten days, it was obvious that in most cases, the cells were indeed fighting the cancer. The process, they admit, could take longer in human beings, and would require about one billion tumor seeking lymphocytes per person treated. They are currently working on creating a vehicle to safely carry the lymphocytes in the human body, and expect the human trial leg of the study to begin within one year.

After I got out of the Military, I worked for a cancer research company here in Houston that was working on pretty much the same thing. We used dead cold viruses, and inserted a new p53 gene, which was the gene linked to most cancers. The clinical trials were pretty positive. I thought the technology and what they were doing was pretty amazing. The trial patients went from having a life expectancy of only a few months, to living years, and the cancer began to die.

Unfortunately, FDA was not real keen on the whole gene therapy thing, and kept asking for additional trials. Eventually, the funding ran out, and they went belly up. The company still holds many of the patents for p53 gene therapy and the process for creating the vaccine. We did at least get to name it before the company went under.

Wow, that's a bit freaky.. and will probably be insanely expensive.
Also reminds me of that Twilight Zone (?) episode with the little machines fighting anything seen as damaged, but then they start turning the guy into a super being because they start messing with his body in order to prevent death and such (give him gills, etc.)... Yeah. I can't remember if it was TZ, but it was awesome.
