Quite possibly the worst luck ever

Just how bad of a day do you have to have for this to even seem in the realm of possibility?

    IRVINE, Calif. -- Forget "Fore!"

"Fire!" was the cry of the day for a golfer whose off-target swing sparked a 12-acre blaze in Southern California.

The golfer at the Shady Canyon Golf Course in Irvine landed a shot in the rough Saturday. On his next swing, his club snagged a rock, causing a spark that lit the rough ablaze and eventually attracted 150 firefighters to the scene.

Fire officials say the fire burned through the rough, into vegetation next to the course and over two dry, brushy hillsides.

No charges were filed against the golfer, whose name was withheld.

Actually, that's just plain awesome. Now if he lit his own property on fire, it would be bad luck.

I saw this today; my money is on he was smoking a cig, tossed it, lit the shit on fire, made up a story, and all evidence of said cigarette went up in flames. My geology skills may be lacking, but I'm pretty sure that the chance of flint or any other spark capable rock being near a club swing is ridiculous.

it would be most awesome if they finished the round with the whole course going up in flames, sort of like the preacher in caddyshack in the rainstorm

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

If this is indeed true it's pretty awesome, since this was the first golf related story that got my interest.

Many golfers have cigars when they play - they last a long time and they rarely burn out once lit. You puff, toss it on the ground, swing, pick it up, still lit. Or you forget where you put it and leave it, happens a lot.

I mean, I suppose it's possible. I've sparked my driver several times on a teebox, even on rained-yesterday grass. But can you really get the swing speed needed in the rough? Furthermore, sparks don't necessarily mean fire, you need easily burnable tinder as a firestarter. The dropped cig is way more likely.
