Chris Fenton, an electrical engineer living in NYC, works on modern super-computers, but he always wanted one of his own.
This one weighs a lot less than 5.5 tons.

It also cost less than the adjusted $31 million ($8.86 million in 1977).
Now if you remember correctly, the Cray-1A ran at a blistering-fast 80 MHz and you'll never use up all 32 megabytes of memory!
Totally useless by today's standards, yet somehow very cool that he bothered to look up the original architecture and mimic it on a dev board.
His only problem? The original Cray-1 software (OS, compilers, etc.) is unavailable.
But if you know how to find a copy, leave a comment on his blog.
Fenton also makes his own notebook computers

and a gas-powered pickle cannon!? (table breaking)
