    Crafting - Alchemy specifically

I'm almost rank 6 alchemist and with my leves up, I should be able to skill up more today to get to 7 or so. Anyway, where can I buy mats and stuff for crafting? I have tons of crystals and ore in my bags but based on the recipe list on the lodestone, I need muddy water for the starting synths but I haven't seen it anywhere. Am I just being a tard? Please halp!

I've seen it carried by the NPC in Gridania that sells Discipline of the Land stuff (probably the same for all cities). S/He sells fishing rods, gigs, bait, pickaxes, sledgehammers, and...

I believe I found some muddy water while spearfishing in caves. You can also buy it in Ul'dah, Gridania, and Limsa Lominsa.

Muddy Water is sold by the Alchemist NPC in the shops area in eastern Gridania. It is the same NPC that sells the Alchemist tools.

I just checked eorzeapedia to find my muddy water. It's in a stall east of the chocobo stables if you're in Uldah. TBH, just spamming muddy water is a ridiculous way to skill up and get physical exp too if you want it. Almost too easy. Could probably spam it well into the teens.

Similarly, just about any fish + wind shard + knife = endless culinary skill.

The endless skill synth for Alchemists after distilled water is bee baskets->beechips->beeswax. Then after that switch to crystals->shards.

Yeah but these baskets are hard to find. I'm thinking about making Growth Formula Alpha before shards. I wonder what rank I can start on shards.

I did muddy water to distled water from lv 1 to like 12...

    Its ...
    1. Cheap as hell (like 140g per craft?)
    2. 200 skill (600ish physical) a craft by 11 which is still good
    3. takes 1 fire shard, which I see most people sell for 30-60g each.

estimated 20,000g to get 20,000 skill points you can't possibly fail on (at lv11)
thats probably about 2-3 level's of alchemy (takes a long time but hey.. as long as it gives skill..)

Bees can be found without too much trouble in the North Forest around Gridania, and I'm pretty sure the baskets aren't terribly uncommon drops. If you have shriekshrooms on hand, GFA are never a bad choice, though if you need to go farm mats, and are mainly looking for skillups, bees would be far more worth your time. While 1 shriekshroom would net you one GFA, 1 bee basket = 12 beehive chips = 4 beeswax. The crafts net around the same skill IIRC, so you're getting 5x the sp for bees over shrooms.

Does Muddy Water/Fish spam ever cap out to the point you can't skill on it? I'm wanting to push my CUL/ALC into the mid teens before I move on off these if possible, but I'm not sure if the skill/exp:cost ratio is worth it or if it's even possible.

I have about 20 shrooms waiting for me. I wonder what level I can make betas because I have dozens of leafs.

I've not seen over 200 since like rank 5... Getting 130-170 right now at rank 10. But it's still good.

Don't think it's going to drop off completely. It'll just become less and less worth your time since the higher level you are, the more options are going to be available for easy, much higher skill gains. Once you can consistently do r10+ crafts in, say, alchemy, you'd probably be getting shy of 100 per craft for distilled water, where you could be getting 250-300 per craft with not much extra effort :O

Right and while I know it's unavoidable to an extent, I'm trying to prevent globe trotting for skill ups on things that cost an arm an a leg for single mats. Unless I'm missing some higher level easy crafts, I hadn't seen any opportunities for that so I'm trick to stick to easy routes for now.

Any suggestions on viable skillups at Alchemy 15? I seem to have hit a wall wherein I can't even reliably make R11 synths like crystals -> crystal shards (which my LS wants me to be able to do), and even stuff like dyes and fish glue have been giving me some problems. Still using a Copper Alembic and Hempen craftsmanship+ gear, which is suboptimal, but I can't seem to find a Brass Alembic and my Weaver friend isn't quite to the point where he can make cotton gear reliably. R1 and R5 synths (and leves) are starting to give me around 80 to 100 SP a pop, when I do succeed at a R11 synth I get between 300 and 500, which is nice, but it seems like the game is expecting you to be wearing rank-appropriate gear (which is understandable, but I don't want to put Alchemy on hold and get outleveled, and I know I've seen at least a few people on Palamecia with higher than rank 15 alchemy, so there's got to be a way.)

My current plan is to farm bees for bee baskets tonight for a while, and try to get some skill off of baskets -> chips -> beeswax, and level subcrafts until I manage to find rank-appropriate gear so I can actually not fail miserably at rank 10 and 15 leves.

Also, and semi relatedly: Does anyone have any idea which synths you're supposed to use the mortar on? I've got a fun story involving breaking wheat-grinding over and over with a mortar and then instantly succeeding when I tried to grind wheat in an alembic, so I'm kind of fundamentally distrustful about using -logic- here. So far I've got the mortar being used for crystals -> shards, but it might just be a combination of bad luck and confirmation bias. Also, do your primary and secondary tool add up +craftsmanship, or is it the case that, if you're using the mortar, your alembic's stats get ignored? This could get irritating as the second mortar is in the mid 20s, rankwise, and so early 20s mortar synths would be somewhat gimped by the R1 mortar's low stats?

Leveling 15+ I've pretty much been sharding crystals/moraines for skill, and offering to make things for people.

As for the mortar, I don't think SE has fully fleshed out what the secondary tools are for at the moment.

Saphere, what's your crafting gear like? Yesterday and this morning I started grinding on crystals -> shards for myself and LS mates, and I was running into a really distressing number of breaks.

Then again, apparently synthing is glitched right now and failure happens more often than it should; it could be that that's screwing me up.

I got lucky and found a Cotton Doublet(Yellow) for 10k in the Wards +10craftsmanship/+3 Mag.Craftsmanship, Cotton Scarf, Hempen Slops(Trying to find a pair of Cotton Slops though), Smithy's Gloves, and a Brass Alembic.
