    MAME controls

Just wondering if anyone has experience messing around with MAME. I'm using MAME32v103.

my confusion is when im trying to set up the controller. There's listing to config the directions but some of them say "left/left or right/left" what am i supposed to press to configure those? I'm trying to play the old time beat em ups like Xmen, but my character wont move up or down when i try to play. Can anyone give me a quick and dirty rundown on what to do?

Those types of directions are usually unneeded, as they just press two directions at the same time instead of having their own key.

Open any game you'd like, and when it's loaded, press Tab to bring up the menu. Go to Input (general) to set global keys to be used throughout all of your games. If there's a game you want different controls for, the option underneath that [Input (This Game)] will have a game-specific config.

In this case, use Input (General).

The only controls you really need to worry about are P1 UP, P1 DOWN, P1 LEFT, P1 RIGHT, P1 Buttons 1-6 (or 8, if you have that many buttons), and Start.

Highlight a button, press enter, then press the button or direction on your controller that you want to be assigned to that. Diagonals are already taken care of, so there's no need to set those.

    Should look like this.

In your case, the keyboard buttons will be replaced by buttons on your gamepad like JOY 1 and whatnot.

The usual layout for a panel is like this

    1237
    4568

    Think of it as
    Code:
    LP, MP, HP, [LP+MP+HP]
    LK, MK, HK, [LK+MK+HK]
    Or for an XBox Controller
    Code:
    X, Y, RB, RT
    A, B, LB, LT

Wow, thank you so much for that detailed guide! I hate to sound like a complete tard about this stuff but i'm new to it.

As for TMNT and other beat em ups, i'm having trouble getting the corner controls to work, (moving nw, se etc). My character studders and seems to only respond to the up/down/left/right you mentioned above. Is there a way to remedy this? Or am i doing something wrong (likely).

I don't recall having an issue like that, but I suppose you can try to set the diagonals.

    LEFT/UP
    LEFT/DOWN
    RIGHT/UP
    RIGHT/DOWN

For LEFT/UP, for example, highlight it, press enter, and press the diagonal on your D-pad that corresponds with it. You can also press Left and Up sequentially very quickly to get the same effect. You'll know if you put it in correctly if the input either says LEFT UP or UP LEFT.

    UP/DOWN
    LEFT/LEFT
    RIGHT/RIGHT
LEFT/RIGHT are all unneeded, unless you wish to have a single direction or button bound to dash/run for some games.
