    Batwoman (CW) - Season 2 January 17, 2021

Written by Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries)
Batwoman revolves around Kate Kane, who, armed with a passion for social justice and flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city's criminal resurgence. But don't call her a hero yet: in a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham's symbol of hope.

She will be introduced into the Arrowverse this December.

Sounds exactly like Supergirl. Curious how they'll incorporate Big Daddy Bats into this.

Sooooo Batman is saving Gotham from homicidal maniacs, arsonists, terrorists, etc and Batwoman is saving Gotham from fat-shamers, people who utter slurs and white people who call the cops on black people for no reason. Did I get that right?

    an out lesbian
Seriously how is that at all relevant to being a super hero?

Wait...this isnt green lit for any kind of individual run yet yet:
Should Batwoman move to series, it would join a slate of DC series at The CW that includes Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Black Lightning as Berlanti also builds a roster of DC fare on the comic book powerhouse's forthcoming DC Universe subscription digital platform. Launching in August, that platform will feature scripted originals including Titans, Doom Patrol and more.
From what I get of that, they're just including her in a crossover event, and will see if Batwoman merits a full on series.

To be fair, TV isn't just about making good stories. It's always been that they're trying to appeal to a certain demographic to reel in viewers. In this case, it's people who want to see a strong gay female lead, which must comprise a decent portion of the population... although it probably appeals to some in a different way from the way the creators wish XD

Batwoman is actually a real badass in the comics. Her dad is a rogue military officer who was Martha Wayne's brother and after her murder he went off the rails and started his own secret army. He trained Kate to take it over one day. Most of her stories have her traveling around the globe fighting super terrorists and she's killed at least once when no other option presented itself.

And also she's an out lesbian which caused controversy when there were plans to have her marry Metropolis's police chief, Maggie Sawyer, but Warner Bros. said no and the storyline got dropped.

Yeah but now she just kills period (she never really was for the no kill policy). And not just bad guys. And future Tim Drake has a mighty big bone to pick with her if you can believe him

It's as relevant as being straight? Which is to say, quite a lot because most comics spend a great deal of time exploring a superhero's civilian identity and/or the balance between their heroism and personal lives.

And that usually comes with quite a bit of time spent on their relationships. Cap and Sharon Carter. Spider-man and Mary Jane (or Gwen Stacey before her). The Cyclops/Wolverine/Jean love triangle. There is not a single MCU solo movie without a love interest.

The X-Men gained popularity in no small part due to how the storylines about societal prejudice against them as mutants resonated with readers. In turn the X-men also helped to teach many young persons in the majority that prejudice is bad.

We're at the point now where characters in starring roles being something besides a straight, white, male isn't an automatic dead on arrival. So we can tell stories about experiences without metaphor; rather than having white characters who endure imaginary discrimination, we can have just show experiences of women, persons of color, and LBGT.

Representation in comics isn't about change because of the matriarchal conspiracy, it's because comics are better when they are true to life (beyond the necessary suspension of disbelief regarding the superhero vigilantism). Having a cast of characters that better represent the composition of society (i.e. not everyone being white, not everyone being straight, the women with their own story arcs) makes storylines more compelling and helps them resonate better with readers.

(And this is coming from someone who did not appreciate Marvel's affirmative action Avengers initiative to replace all the founding white male Avengers with diversity enhancing alternatives.)

Say what you will about the affirmative Avengers but Jane Foster and Riri Williams made excellent characters in their roles while they lasted. Amadeus Cho and Sam Wilson, eh.
