Ugh, help with a phone # issue

So, yesterday my old boss called me (used to run a learning center now we go house to house for kids) saying something weird like "you have a weird phone number can you stay after tutoring so I can talk to you?" I live in cali but my number is still CT.

Anyway, so I talk to her and it turns out her husband has been cheating on her, and she's got some weird thing where she found out the woman's name but the husband is still denying everything. And since they share phone accounts she can see the phone log online, but not who owns the numbers. I guess he's been calling a new number now so she thinks the woman changed her number.

So she wants me to call the new number and pretend to be a t-mobile rep to try to get some info (name, address, etc.) Totally don't think I can pull that off lol.

but I was looking online and saw that you can pay like 3 bucks to find out info from a phone number.

I don't want to call and get involved if the woman finds out I'm just helping my boss, but at the same time my boss has helped me out a lot in the past so I feel like I owe her.


tl:dr- are those places online where you pay money to find out who owns a number legit? would the person find out I was looking up on them? Or any other advice I can do to get the info?

I've found that for land lines you can usually get a name for free. Any additional information past that; they want you to pay for. For cell numbers it's hit or miss. I've been able to get a name off of one number before, and the other times I haven't been able to get anything past an area code.

Edit: If I were in your shoes I'd politely decline to offer her any physical help. Just adviser how you would go about finding out that information if you were in her shoes and leave it up to her to actually do the leg work.

Edit 2: She could always just call from a payphone (yes, they still exist) and hope to get her voice mail message w/ name hopefully or pretend to be phone company herself.

I understand what you're saying I just feel bad, I've had to say no to her a lot in the past when she had to file for bankruptcy n' such, I feel if for once I can give her something I should, but not at risk to myself.
