    EXCUSE ME CHICAGO PEOPLE

Do any of you actually live IN chicago or are you all just around it? I have some important questions.

is the job market as bad as people say it is? i have mad fam out there, they are all like YO EMPLOYMENT HERE HAS SUCKED DONT MOVE OUT HERE

out here one can live comfortably off 50k a year. would 50 grand cut it there? I cannot imagine the cost of living being that different between DC and Chicago. I'm not trying to live big baller style downtown, but I dont want to live in some ghetto to keep rent cheap.

    how important is a car?

do they still dye the river green on st patricks day?

    is rogers park ghetto?

    what about bucktown?

bucktown is a lil more west than i would like to live but fuck i would love to tell people i am from bucktown

Cars are very important, with a car you can pay all kinds of money for things like city stickers, parking permits, plus you'll have a convenient place to get parking tickets when inevitably your city sticker and/or parking permit is messed up. Cars also help if you want to spend lots of time not being able to drive it because the city plowed eight feet of snow over it.

Honestly, having a car is required if you live anywhere AROUND Chicago, but if you live IN the city, it's a liability. Bucktown is p. nice, I know a bunch of folks who live there, pretty cool neighborhood. Dunno about what rent is like there, though.

Love me some Chi., Tyven if I move back to Stl you down? We can hit up all the strip clubs in East St Louis, which is technically Illinois' eye sore. As far as jobs go, you're in politics so you would fit right in with ACORN if im not mistaken. You care about blax in politics so its a match made is chocolate heaven.

    - I live in the city (Lakeview)

    - Job market is getting better, it's still tough to find a job like any other city, but there's a lot more opportunity

    - You can live very comfortably off $50k a year depending on where you find a place

    - A car is not very important unless you'll travel to the suburbs often. If you stick to the city, the CTA buses and trains are pretty good. There's also a million cabs that will take you anywhere if you ever need one

    - They still dye the river green on St. Pat's day

    - I used to live in Rogers Park. It's sort of ghetto but you can find really affordable apartments there. If you move there, live around the Loyola University area, it's the least shadiest part of that town.

    - You can move to Bucktown if you really enjoy being around thousands of hipsters, but you can find some pretty affordable apartments too

    - If you want to be around where all of the action is, I suggest living in Lakeview or Lincoln Park but it's a bit more pricey

Hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions!

More on the "living around Loyola University area": a cousin of mine goes there for law and lives a block away, he pays $950 a month for a small studio apartment, and then $200 a month for parking.

Can't compare to other buildings in the area, but it was small as hell, but i guess its decent price for being in the city. Also, likes others said, a car will only be a hassle in the city. Even if you want to go to some suburbs around chi, you can take the train (very decent and clean).

Just depends on where you look. I also lived a block away and payed $780 for a nice place - one bedroom, dining room, living room, and kitchen (it was actually John Cusack's apt building from the movie High Fidelity if you've seen it)

Will have to look this up and let him know. I doubt my cousin looked at too many places before he decided. He's from fort worth texas, so i think the city overwhelmed him a little lol

edit: mind giving me the adress for the building, if you still remember?

They own a few buildings in the area and usually have pretty good prices. Tyven, might want to consider giving that guy a call if you choose to live in that area.

I'm pretty sure with some searching you'll have a easier time finding affordable housing in Chicago than in DC.

If I visit Chicago will you not check your PMs and then not get lunch with me?

If i were to live in Chicago, i would go live in an area where your neighbors only rob hedge funds.

I live in Rogers Park. It's not ghetto in relation to parts of Uptown or the south/west sides. Rent here is definitely much more affordable than other parts of the city. My previous apartment was 3br/2ba in a two-flat for 1200/mo. A studio or 1br in RoPo will run you between 500-750/mo depending on where you live. A city sticker permit isn't that expensive and it's pretty easy finding parking in Zone 56 (much of RoPo). A lot of the rental stock in Rogers Park aren't run by companies, rather individual landlords, so finding a really great deal can be a little difficult.

A car is not needed in the city at all unless you go to suburbs that aren't Evanston.

Bucktown is nice, but getting expensive. More expensive than Rogers Park. My old boss lives in Bucktown and it's really gentrified now. Logan Square is the new Bucktown/Wicker Park, might be worth a look.

Also Skidz, the Loyola Law School is based downtown (I worked at the law school for the past 2 years!) on the Gold Coast 2 blocks from Water Tower Place. Does your cousin live down there or in Rogers Park? 950/mo for Rogers Park is pretty expensive unless you have a really nice place in one of the condos on the lake or a new rehab.

Like others have said - you can get around pretty well without a car if you are going to be in the city or Evanston/Skokie. Was about to get a place in Rogers Park that was like 2 blocks east of the El and was very affordable at the time (two years ago) [Currently in Evanston and Elgin]

Job Market? I have no idea, sorry. My market is shit anyway, I'm lucky to have a retail job.

Yeah he's over by the law school in gold coast. After i looked up where the building that Daahan posted was, I realized my mistake. So I guess $950 for a studio isn't that bad in that location?

Gf lives on State St while in school and I live in Lake County IN. I don't bother with my car in the city, at all. The public transportation does just fine. When I move in permanently, I'll be looking near the north or west side. I heard if you went far enough south, theres some nice areas away from the shit of the south side.

I've lived in Louden/Fairfax county with Dolmen, OP. I found rent even more expensive out there, and jobs seem harder to find unless you worked for the government and/or Tiered tech jobs. I do miss the east coast, but am just as happy here in the Chicago area.

Understandable. Moving from a 2nd rate state to any of the greater 49 is an eye opening experience. Its akin to waking up again for the very first time.

950 for a studio is pretty decent for the Gold Coast. I don't know why he'd bring his car though (unless he goes to the suburbs to visit people), you can literally get anywhere in the city from there in under an hour.
