    Cheap retail store glasses

For about a year and a half now, I've been nearsighted.

It's getting to the point where I can't see what's on the board in class when my teacher is writing.

I notice places like Target, Walmart, Dollar General, etc. have some cheap POS glasses for sale near the medical stuff. How do I go about determining which of these will work best for me?

I can't afford an eye exam or anything like that.

Put on a pair and see if you can see.

AFAIK, nobody sells "Nearsighted Glasses". You go to an eye doc, get your eye prescription, pick out a set of glasses and wait for the lenses to be crafted. You could try to bum a pair off someone with a similar prescription, but all glasses are unique.

    Tough luck.

Well, there's nothing like the school's whiteboards in the store. Lol. Like the periodic table I can see on the other side of the room, I can see fine. Since everything is so damn large in the store, don't really have a good target to compare on. I've tried all the diff kinds before at Target and I couldn't notice any noticeable diff with any of the glasses.

Can't wearing glasses that aren't your perscription give you headaches? Or is that a myth/misconception?

    Spoiler: show

and any drastic change is vision will cause you headaches for awhile, but you'll eventually get used to them. I hadn't updated my prescription in about 4 years(which I needed to), and when I finally did, I could see way better, butthe glasses gave me headaches for about a week.

Yeah they can, and it can also make seeing even more difficult because your eyes may not properly adjust to generic prescriptions.

Those are reading glasses. You really do need to get an eye exam/prescription. Once you have that you could order glasses online for cheap, or go with the cheapest thing they have at the shop. If you're like me when I first needed to start wearing glasses, you won't need them full-time - though I had to start wearing them full time within a couple years as my eyes got worse.

Even ones that -are- correct can give you a bit of a headache at first to get used to. Beyond that, there are multiple factors for lenses - not just the vision correction, but where your eyes are behind the lense, etc, which will also give you problems if it doesn't line up (think if you walked around crosseyed, 'cause that's basically what it can feel like). Not sure if you can get permanent damage from that over time, but it's not really something to chance IMO.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

As Isiolia said, those are reading glasses which aren't the same thing as nearsighted glasses. They are not strong at all and are only really for reading up close. They are essentially magnifying glasses.

If you're past the age of 12 and just now becoming nearsighted, you should really get to a doctor, because it's likely something serious.

Well, it started about a year and a half ago. I honestly think it was the LCD monitor I bought for my computer. Started about a week after I bought it (made a thread about it at that time, seeing that the monitor could be the source of the sudden fucked upness in sight)

It could just be that it is progressively getting worse which is what happens as you age. A lot of people don't actually notice that they're vision is getting worse until it gets to a certain point. I've always been really badly nearsighted so it wasn't like that for me. But I'd agree. Even if you can't get the glasses, get the eyes checked at least. You can go to a place like lenscrafters which usually has doctors onsight and they can give you an exam for like 80 bucks I think at the most. I went last week but I don't remember what I paid. 80 sounds about right though.

Yea, I definitely can't afford that lol. Hell, even my food budget is $2-3/day, which is like 60-90 a month

Don't you have some sort of medical coverage that deducts from eye exams and then save up money for some glasses?

It will be interesting seeing the marked improvement in Cream Soda's life when Obamacare provides him with fully subsidized health insurance.

I'm sure you can manage riding around with just rims. No lenses necessary.

Since when is that a disqualification? See soldiers with glasses all the time.

There's some kind of goodwill program for getting glasses, my mom would always donate our old frames to....someplace. Those are frames though, and granted the lenses went with them but idk if the people that take them keep the lenses or if they just provide the frames.

If you could find out how that program works in your area you might be able to try on old donated pairs with lenses still in them and see if any of them work for you, if you absolutely can't afford an eye exam it's worth a shot I guess. If you do manage to find a pair that works for what you need them for (distance) just be wary of how often you wear them because like others have said they can be bad if you struggle focusing on other things. I'm near sighted as well and a bit vain about my glasses so I only wear them in public when I need to, the rest of the time they're on my collar, wearing them in that capacity should be safe enough as far as making your eyes worse I guess.
