Winter Coat halp: Archibald's GF hates BG

I've been looking at getting a good winter coat for a little while now since moving back to Minnesota. I've already made a few baby steps and purchased a few layering things....and I got a Pea Coat for nicer occasions, but I still don't have a proper winter coat for when it drops to -20f.

I've been looking around for a bit and I've kinda just latched onto my dream coat, although it's really really pricey. It kinda has the look/features/warmth/quality I want, though.

Dream Coat

My big issue is a lot of coats from are multi-layered. Which is great and fine, but I feel like I can already layer well enough with the stuff I have, I'd rather buy a coat that does the trick by itself. Also, the multi-layered coats tend to be larger, I'd rather have something more fitting. And by multi-layered I mean like 3-in-1 coats.

Anyways, I've kinda gone insane looking for shit. I really don't even know what I'm looking for in terms of Down vs. Synthetic Vs. Goretex Vs. Dry Q Vs. whatever. I don't know what "40D Nylon Lining" is. So any opinions or advice would be helpful.

Also, I just got a neat coupon from a co-worker for 50% off Columbia or Mountain Hardwear. None of the Columbia stuff looks like anything I'd want, and I have a hard time deciphering how warm some of the Mountain Hardwear stuff is. But ideally....cheaper is better, but I still don't want to buy anything I won't like.

Unless you've got a prodeal Arcteryx isn't worth the money and without a prodeal/sale neither is pategucci.

I'd look into Mountain Hardware or REI during a sale instead.

+a longsleeve pategucci Lv3 top underneath should be fine for being outside for a bit when it's cold.

If you are really looking for something for -20F, then you're going to need a gortex shell + down jacket + longsleeve Lv3 top and that's going to cost you some money.

What I usually climb with/snowboard with is OR but it keeps me warm when inactive (layered) and can be unzipped when active (i really love the pants, can unzip them from knee to ass and get the cold air on bare skin so you don't sweat)

All good ideas. Why is Arc'Teryx not worth the money? I mean...I understand you can get alternatives for less, as in, you can layer/get the job done in different ways. But are there coats out there that are as warm as the one I posted for less?

Part of the reason I'd like a more athletic fit is because I'll be climbing as well. I have a buddy who will give me his Mountain Hardwear Alchemy. But again, layering seems like such a hassel. Maybe I'm just being lame about it....but a soft/hard shell seems lame compared to a jacket that can stand alone in -20f.

Do you live somewhere that gets -20f? I mean...it's a big diff, and MN sucks ass like that.

Edit: But I definitely agree in a sense about the Arc'Teryx pricing. I'd look for a deal for something like that....right now there's a blue one on Ebay for 295. I'd wait for a deal.
