Can't watch blu-ray movies on my computer.

    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

I have one of these: http://www.lg.com/us/data-storage/lg-GBW-H20L
Positively ancient by computer hardware standards, but I remember it used to work.
It came with this godawful software: http://www.cyberlink-usa.com/product...res_en_US.html
Except the version that came packed with the hardware was version 7. According to their support forums, this is past its end of life cycle and they offer zero support for my problem, which is that every time I start the application I get a 'A critical component of the player requires periodic updates.' dialog. Pushing through that dialog seems to trigger an update dialog that literally does nothing, report success, only to greet me again with the previous dialog the next time I press Play. See this thread for a basic description of my symptoms. I don't have AnyDVD installed on my machine. At least, not anymore.

At this point I'm looking for any solution that lets me watch blu-rays on my computer. Neither media player classic, VLC nor WMP play it and I'm loath to install some sketchy drivers that connect to pirate AACS servers. I'm also not interested in ripping my blu-rays to my HDD since I don't really have that kind of time/space left on my drives.

I'm fairly certain the firmware of my drive is up to date but I have no real way of telling, as LG doesn't list driver downloads on their site for my model drive. I'm not about to drop another $200 for another drive if this is the experience I'm going to get with my first internal drive, either.

Help me BG, I want to watch my blu-ray discs on my blu-ray drive, but this fucking software is saying no.

    FFXIV Character
    Niya Kouya
    FFXIV Server
    Odin

Then how about buying a new(er) version of PowerDVD (or trying a demo if available) that can handle BDs properly and works under Win7?

You'll need to get the latest version of the AACS codecs, which means you need the latest software. Usually they give you the plugin updates for free. I had PDVD 10 bundled with mine OEM but upgraded to 12 for integration with WMC.

There isn't really any other way to do it, I'm afraid. You have like, 3 options for software.

Yeah after more searching around it looked pretty hopeless with my decrepit version of powerdvd.
What a miserable experience. Either you join the pirate arms race and download dlls from anonymous sources to continue using the discs and hardware you legitimately bought or you start running that treadmill of software that costs quite a bit of cash for one fucking function that will stop working for you after 3 years.

The "Your Screen is not HDCP compliant" is not necessarily related to your computer hardware. I've suffered the same error by having / using a lower quality HDMI cable. I point it out since this is mentioned in that thread; while they talk about DVI they don't talk about how HDMI can also fail you.

It is rather odd though - I've used LG ( models CH08LS10 and GGC-H20L ) and Sony ( model BC-5100S ) BDROM players, always with AnyDVD and MPC ( also occassionally with CCCP but this latest system I'm using for example has no specifically installed codec packs ) without issue on Vista / 7 / 8. I don't know what the difference would be between GGC-H20L and the GBW-H20L that would cause it to be so problematic with using other players. I tried to download the spec sheet of your drive to compare it with the one I have but the PDF link on the LG page is corrupted. Edit: For reference, the GGC-H20L model I have was purchased in 2008.
