    Buying a Gun

So, I got offered a security job and need a gun. Problem is, I have no idea what's a good deal and what's not, or what's a good brand. I'm looking for a semi-automatic 9mm with no more than a 10 capacity magazine. Hallow point bullets are a must since I need as much stopping power as I can get and the hallow points don't penetrate the target as much as regular shells. Does anybody know a good website I can look at, or a good brand to search for? Looking between 200-400 dollar price range. Thanks in advance.

Colt is pretty good but as far as I know, as far as I know most accurate hand gun out of a box is a CZ-75 runs about 400-600.

For my concealed carry I use a Beretta 92FS with hollow point rounds, but it has a 15 round clip so its not exactly what you're looking for, but something similar might be.

Your really can't go wrong with Glock or Beretta from my experience. Double action triggers are great on semi-automatic pistols when you get the hang of them. (I'm assuming you'll be spending plenty of time at the range if you do indeed get a gun.)

Pretty normal for most security jobs, hell some munipal police departments have officers buy their own.

Most places other than California, New Jersey, New york, Hawaii, and Cook County Illinois will sell guns (esp. 9mm) with mags with more than 10 round capacity. If you live in a restricted state all you will get is 10 rounds that that is a non issue if you live there. If not buy the gun and go to cdnn sports and order more mags. Or Let me know what you buy and I can direct you where to buy 10 round mags.

Having sold guns for the last 5 years, I always recommend people to go to many shops and hold different models. Buying a gun is like buying shoes, you will know the one when you for you when you hold it, so try a few at different places and think back on the ones you tried and get the one that felt best. This is important for the gun that may save your life, because the gun that you feel most comfortable with is something that will become an extension of you and you will enjoy practicing with it. You have the caliber and you price range narrowed down so I would just have you hold a few then write down brand and models and go to the internet for reviews.

As for brands in your price range it may be a bit difficult, but not overly impossible to find one.

Taurus is a good overall brand in that price range, and I've sold hundreds of them and own 2 myself. They have a good quality, great trigger pull, lifetime warranty, great customer service, and a moderate price tag. I would recommend finding one made after 2001 though, that is when they step up their quality. Look for the model PT92, 24/7, or 809 for a duty gun.

Ruger p series guns will also be in your price range

Glock, Springfield, and Berreta is just above in the $500 range, but you may find some police trade in on the glocks if you check around. Sig Sauer will mostly be out of you price range but their model 2022 should be around $400.

Ammunition can be found in your gun search and it is mostly personal preference when going with the big names in personal defense. I use Speer Gold Dots personally, but Winchester PDX1s and Hornady XTP or Critical Duty rounds have gotten good reviews. Find the least expensive brass practice rounds and burn through about 500 rounds at your nearest range.

I wouldn't recommend ordering online for the casual purchaser but Budsgunshop.com has great prices once you try some out in person. Where are you located?

You can purchase 10 round mags for just about all the popular guns. The Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 required that no magazine have a capacity of more than 10 rounds, so all guns and mags manufactured during the time the bill was active were made with that capacity. It has sunset in most places, so a lot of people got rid of theirs so you can find them pretty cheap. Also, in the places the ban is still in effect the gun shops in those areas can only sell 10 rounders.

Hit up every gun store in a 100-mile radius and fingerfuck the hell out of everything to get a list of what you're interested in. Check the local range(s) and see if you can rent out the common models and try a mag or two on each. If you got a few in mind get a quote from the gun stores and pick which one will cut you the best deal or toss in the most perks (extra mag, discount on bulk ammo, holster, etc), ???, profit. Unless your job/state specifically forbids having mags that hold over 10 rounds I would ignore that requirement.

I remember paying about 100 bucks for a 500 round box of 9mm FMJ a few months ago so prices are decent still. Expect JHP to be at least 50-90 cents/rd. I would recommend trying different JHP brands to see which feeds through your gun most reliably while making the best smiley face on paper.

You'll want to hit up the range at least once a month for 50-100 rounds. Shooting a gun isn't quite like riding a bike. You have to maintain a good edge on control and consistency which you /will/ lose over time. Which is bad if the time comes you are required to use it.

Finally, ask /k/ what they think about 9mm for home defense.

Glock, CZ75, S&W M&P 9mm, Ruger P95 all great and around your price range. If you are going to use it for work the Beretta 92fs, SW M&P, and Rugers have thumb safeties. Some places have policy on such things. Sig Sauer is going to probably be out of your price range but also an excellent weapon in the p226.

Honestly, I'd say one of the biggest factors in a pistol is how it feels in your hand. If you aren't comfortable with a weapon chances are you aren't going to be able to handle it reliably/accurately. I would do what others have mentioned and drive around to every gun store, hold as many models as you can, try out the triggers, safeties, mag releases, and just see which one feels the best to use.

I picked up a Sig p250c for just over $400 recently for my traveling vehicle carry/concealed pistol and I love it for the price range.

You're kinda limited to meh stuff at that price range. A few years ago I was able to get a used Sig p228 at around $400, bit more after transfer, tax and ammo.

Seriously, if your getting paid to carry a firearm, do yourself and everyone around you a favor and take some sort of handgun safety/training classes (plural, multiple, preferably NRA certified). Find a range in your area that offers them.

I wouldn't want to use an issued weapon when I had the option of using my own. Especially if there's some chance you'll ever have to actually use it.

In CA it's illegal to carry a magazine with more than 10 rounds. Except if you bought the gun before 2001.

I've taken and passed both the Guard Card training of power to arrest, and the guard firearms safety and training course.

Thanks for the advice everybody. I'll make sure to try as much as I can and see how they feel.

That was in the second part of my first post lol. No big worry on mag capacity then because all guns sold in your state will have 10 rounders and no online shop will ship to you if they have more than that.
