CESA Shares Preliminary Tokyo Game Show Stats
    Spoiler: show
Tokyo Game Show 2012 currently has 207 companies set to exhibit, a figure that exceeds last year 193. At present, the show is scheduled to have over 712 games. In the end, CESA expects the game count to top last year's 736.

These stats come from CESA's progress report update on the show today. Every year, the organizer releases two such progress reports, one a few weeks before the show, and a final one just ahead of the show's start. Today's report is current as of August 30.

Smartphone and Tablets currently lead the way in game counts, with respectively 93 and 41 titles. On consoles, PlayStation 2 has the most support, followed by 3DS, and Xbox 360.

Here's the current console share chart. When viewing this chart, keep in mind that most companies have not yet announced their lineup, so these figures have no relation to the final tallies:

    Nintendo DS: 0
    Nintendo 3DS: 13
    Wii: 0
    Wii U: 0
    PlayStation 2: 17
    PlayStation Portable: 5
    PlayStation Vita: 6
    Xbox 360: 10
    Other: 8
(CESA did not include PlayStation 3 for some reason).

Simulation and action are the most popular game categories at present. Following these two are RPGs, card games, sports, simulation RPG, shooting, adventure, puzzle and racing.

"I talked to Hashimoto-san about various things. It seems that Versus XIII won't be at TGS. They are concentrating all their resources into the conclusion of the Lightning saga and FFXIV."

Hidden within Square Enix's Tokyo Game Show lineup announcement today was a big surprise for potential Wii U buyers. The company says that it will share details on the Wii U version of DQX during a special stage event.

We haven't heard anything about the Wii U version of DQX since Square Enix announced it as a second platform for the game to join Wii. The TGS event could be our first glimpse at what's new for Wii U players.

Namco Bandai's impressive Tokyo Game Show game list does not show any Wii U support. But it looks like the company has prepared for the possibility of showing something for Wii U.

The Namco Bandai TGS portal lists games along side an icon for the target platform. Wii games have this icon:

    http://tgs2012.channel.or.jp/common/...s/icon_wii.gif

Someone tried to add a u to the file name, and surprise surprise a Wii U graphic appeared:

    http://tgs2012.channel.or.jp/common/.../icon_wiiu.gif

Is this a hint that one of the "coming soon" slots in the title list will be a Wii U game? Or perhaps someone in Namco Bandai's design team just copied a bunch of common use logos into the new TGS portal folder.

We'll likely find out over the coming weeks!

As usual, Nintendo will not attend Tokyo Game Show. However, third parties will be showing some Wii U product. Square Enix has already promised Wii U Dragon Quest X details.

Namco Bandai's current Wii U lineup includes Tank! Tank! Tank! and Tekken Tag Tournament 2. These don't appear in the Namco Bandai title list at present.

Tokyo Game Show attendees will get to sample a new demo of Metal Gear Rising next week. Metal Gear mastermind Hideo Kojima is checking that demo right now, and he provided a teaser image via Twitter.

Gamers will get first hands on play time with Monster Hunter 4 at this year's Tokyo Game Show. But that's not all. Capcom is also teasing that some "surprising information" will be announced about the game.

The tease is for the game's stage event which will feature an introduction to the game's new systems and actions from the development staff. Visit Capcom's TGS page for a stage schedule.

Before anyone starts anticipating a PlayStation Vita port announcement, the announcement is not going to be that, so stop anticipating it.

The game's Tokyo Game Show demo will include battles against three monsters, along with play over the new ruins field. Players will also get to try out the new "Controllable Insect Bow" weapon.

Tokyo Game Show has opened with some memorable keynotes in the past, with industry figures like Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata and then Sony Computer Entertainment CEOs Ken Kutaragi and Kaz Hirai taking to the podium, in some cases with major reveals (like the first showing of the Wiimote).

This year, the keynote honors go to Yoshikazu Tanaka, CEO of social gaming giant GREE. Tanaka will give a speech titled "The Evolution of Social Gaming Brought on by Smart Devices."

Tanaka also gave a keynote about social games last year. That keynote was the third in a series of keynotes that started with CESA chairman Yoichi Wada (also CEO of Square Enix) and a look at PlayStation Vita.

The keynote program this year includes just two speeches. Tanaka's speech will be preceded by a speech from the CESA chairman, a position now held by Namco Bandai VP Shin Unozawa.

Square Enix said last week that we'd be getting first details on the Wii U version of Dragon Quest X at Tokyo Game Show. Now it looks like we'll be getting a first look as well!

The name of the stage is "Dragon Quest X Wii U Demonstration Stage," Square Enix announced today. The stage will be hosted by DQX producer Yousuke Saito.

The official description of the stage reads that we will at long last be getting information about the Wii U version. The name "demonstration" suggests that we'll also be getting a live demonstration of the game, although the description doesn't specifically state this.

Don't expect DQX to make a surprise playable appearance on the show floor. The game will not be playable, Square Enix explicitly stated in its press release announcing the stage events today.

Dragon Quest X will also be featured in a "developers special talk" where Saito and director Jin Fujisawa will detail the game's big October update.

Series creator Yuji Horii will take part in a live recording of the Square Enix Chan! web radio program. He and Saito will answer questions about DQX.

Other Dragon Quest related events include a Dragon Quest X photo contest and a Dragon Quest Monsters Terry's Wonderland 3D tournament.

Keiji Inafune appears to be teasing a Tokyo Game Show announcement at his Inaf**king blog (note: asterisks were added for effect).

In a post today, Inafune mentioned that his PlayStation Vita action title Soul Sacrifice will make its world playable debut in Sony's booth, and he'll be taking part in interviews and events.

The game will have a large number of kiosks in Sony's booth, said Inafune, allowing many people to play. He hopes to hear feedback and use that feedback to make more adjustments to the game.

Closing off the post, Inafune teased that there maybe a new Inafune-related surprise outside of Soul Sacrifice.

Arcade games usually don't have a big role at Tokyo Game Show, but Sega will be shining the spotlight on one title this year. Border Break Union Version 3.0, the latest entry in the Border Break multiplayer mech combat game series, will be featured as part of a stage event on the 23rd. The event will be hosted by Minoru Shiraishi and Mirin Furukawa.

In addition to the latest details on Version 3.0, the stage event will also feature a first look at Border Break Mobile, an iOS conversion of the series.

Neither game will be playable at TGS.
    http://andriasang.com/con2mo/border_break_tgs/

This is Square Enix's Tokyo Game Show booth map, courtesy the company's TGS special site.

The map shows corners for Bravely Default Flying Fairy, the Dragon Quest X Special Stage, the Dragon Quest X Photo Contest, the Open Mega Theater, Square Enix Publishing, and an information area.

The question is what is in all that grey area. Square Enix still hasn't given a clear list of what games will be playable in its booth.

Namco Bandai announced they will showcase a video game based on Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic at Tokyo Game Show. This game is tied to an Arabian Nights themed anime that follows Aladdin who travels through the desert with a djinn named Ugo.

Screenshots from Jump show Aladdin and Alibaba in the game as playable characters. All of the characters have been rendered into 3D. Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic is an action RPG and slated for release in spring 2013.

Back in July, Famitsu.com held a vote to determine the public national demo for Tales of Xillia 2. It has been decided as the “Big Spirit of Mystery” option, and will be playable at the Tokyo Game Show next weekend. Famitsu.com managed to get an early hands-on with the demo. Here are some details.

In this demo, you’ll be able to enjoy a main scenario dungeon and boss battle. In addition to Elle and Lulu, who are non-playable party members, you’ll have Ludger, Alvin, Elise, and your choice between Jude and Milla on your team.

During the opening event scene, an important character from the first Xillia will suddenly appear. Famitsu’s account of the demo does not share the character’s name, however, they explain the diverged world. People who shouldn’t appear in the real world can exist in this world.

When the event scene ends, the search for the great spirit initiates. To do this, Ludger and company must break through security. Normally, this dungeon has several gimmicks to prevent users from so quickly reaching the end, however, the Tokyo Game Show demo has some changes, allowing users to proceed without being stopped. This is likely due to the demo’s 10-minute play limit. Be careful to choose your battles wisely if you wish to battle the boss waiting at the end.

During battle, you’ll be able to test out multiple combinations of Link Artes between Ludger and his fellow party members. As you attack enemies, a gauge at the left side of the screen will build. Depending on its level (it has five), you’ll be able to perform Link Artes with a variety of partners. Some Link Artes are Unique and listed on a reference screen in the menu, while some are Common and are not listed.

You’ll also be able to experience Ludger’s Corpse Shell ability. By pressing L3 + R3, Ludger will shift to his alternate form (so long as the gauge in the lower right of the screen is full!). In this mode, Ludger and his opponents exist in a different space, where parameters such as HP, TP, and AC are eliminated, allowing Ludger to pour out a continuous amount of attacks against his enemies.

In regard to accessories, you’ll be able to equip characters with “Elle’s Bag” and “Julius’ Glasses,” which will be reflected both in battle and during event scenes. Depending on whether you have Jude or Mila on your team, either “Soundproof Headphones” or “Rose Corsage” can be equipped.

Valhalla Knights 3, Senran Kagura and Oboro Muramasa headed to Vita

Tecmo Koei has revealed a new way to feed your lust for demonic blood: a dark fantasy, samurai action title dubbed Toukiden for the PlayStation Vita and PSP.

Developed by Omega Force, the team behind the Warriors franchise, Toukiden will launch sometime in 2013. The new game will have some cross-platform play between both handheld devices.

Toukiden was revealed during Sony's TGS 2012 keynote with a brief trailer, which a female protagonist slicing giant spiders and ogres in a feudal Japan-style setting – which leads us to believe it's based on a true story.
