Ahmad Jabari, the operational commander of Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, was killed on Wednesday alongside his bodyguard, Mohammed al-Hams, in an initial Israeli strike on a car in Gaza City which took place just before 4:00 pm (14:00 GMT), the Islamist movement said.

Shortly afterwards, Israel pounded the Gaza Strip with another 20 air strikes, killing five more people, two of them children, Hamas health minister Mufid Mukhalalati said in a televised press conference at Gaza City's Shifa hospital.

He said another 30 people had been injured in the wave of strikes on targets across the territory which hit Gaza City, the northern town of Beit Lahiya and the southern city of Khan Yunis.
Military spokeswoman Avital Leibovich said the strike was the start of an operation targeting armed groups in Gaza following multiple rocket attacks on southern Israel.

"The IDF started an operation against terror organisations in Gaza due to the ongoing attacks against Israeli civilians," she said on her Twitter account.

She went on to say that "there are 1.5 million people in Gaza, and even though we were targeted on a daily basis, we still helped Gazans in our hospitals because we are humanitarian people."
    What a cunt...

Are they really posting in English, or are they legitimate translations?

Also, what's strange about a 100 year conflict between Isrealis & Palestinians?

It's the new front on the propaganda war. Israel realizes it's not winning any friends high up so it undertakes Tea Party tactics of getting people to parrot their vile nonsense on Facebook, etc, which worldwide uses English.

Apparently they haven't killed all the top hamas leaders yet.

Thank god they killed that terrorist before he could walk or fire mortars.

Unless I am mistaken, wasn't the British Empire (back when it included Australia and India) the beginning of the current conflict? They began colonizing, etc, and Palestine grew to have a large Jewish community because of its religious significance. It wasn't until after WW2 that the Empire was dissolved and Israel was formally created, but the current conflict itself predates that. It goes back before even WWI, doesn't it? That certainly puts it at more than 100 years old.

Unless I missed something, which is certainly a possibility. History was my favorite subject in High School, but alas, that was almost 7 years ago now, and I've forgotten much of it. Even then, we didn't learn enough about world history, especially if it didn't directly impact the U.S.

    Women and children, obviously.

I can't stand Israel. Because they're ordained as the "chosen ones" in the Bible, they can do whatever they want and the Christian nations will either sweep it under the rug or or publicly defend them. So annoying.

The colonial empires of the 17th-19th centuries are definitely to blame for the lines drawn on maps but violent landgrabs fueled by religious hatred are old as dirt. Jerusalem itself has traded hands so many times it's hilarious.

This is the long-term strategy embedded in Irsael's policies towards the Palestinians. If they can get the narrative to reach the point of 'you can't change the facts on the ground' then the intervening atrocities will get treated like a quaint historical hiccup. "Once upon a time Israel just existed, just like South Africa, Mexico and the United States. Anything before that is just a footnote."

Honestly, I would date the conflict back to the crusades (and yes, that was Christians vs Islam and not so much Jews, but I think it still is a source of ire for them, particularly given the support that Christian nations gave to the founding of Israel). I know to us that seems fucking weird, given that it only took about 40 years for us to forgive the British, but for many of them, the past is something you can't let go. Neighbors have conflicts for generations over fairly silly land use issues.

Oh, yeah, for sure, but I was referring to the current conflict between Jews and Arabs.

Also, this was posted in the youtube thread a while back, and is relevant.

Semi shortened version is Zionist leaders encouraged immigration to Israel thanks to it being an "empty land"but there was no free land since people never stopped living there. Then they bribed some people for unfair laws to steal land from people with ownership in the family dating back over 3000 years. A few other cases of obvious bribery. A bunch of Nazi jews gangs(not a contradiction. they actually had worked for hitler during WW2) committed terror attacks all over the place. Immigration is closed since there isn't enough room for all these people anyway so they do more terror attacks to help the people relocate to Palestine. More terrorist attacks by jewish people everywhere.

Then they (Zionists)declare the 50/50 solution where they should get half the land despite only having 10% of the population at best after decades of forced immigration including the bloody Holocaust going on. Palestinians somehow think that idea isn't fair. Zionists then commit mass genocide and decide to take the whole place to themselves. UN tells them to stop the mass murder. They keep on doing mass murder. UN begs them to stop mass murder. They keep on doing mass murder. UN offers to make them officially a nation of Israel if they stop committing mass murder. Zionists take the deal and do more mass murder. And that's how Israel was formed.

There are alot more details to fill in but that's the general gist for you and none of them are particularly flattering to Zionism anyway.

Actually they recently declared that a democratic Israel is less important than a Jewish Israel. Let me double check for the link since I had only seen the headline and was about to read it.

I remember when social media was celebrated for its ability to deliver messages of hope and triumph during the Arab Spring.

No, I don't suppose any nation that was born in the crucible of WW2 would have a particularly pleasant history, before after or during. It's a shame, really. I actually agree with the general concept behind Zionism- that Jews need a nation to call their own, to prevent another Jewish Holocaust, among other things- but it's been so poorly executed it's hard for me to say I agree with it in practice.
