Kermit Vs Piggy: French Election Theater

we really need a foreign politics thread but it looks like Emmanuel Macron will take the top spot in the first round of France's presidential election with 2nd place Marine Le Pen joining him in the coming run-off on May 7th, where Macron will be the heavy favorite.

the most recent poll i found, from L'Express, has him winning 65% to 35% in a head-to-head, while The Guardian tracking poll shows a narrower 58%-42% split. the gap should close now that she will receive more exposure from being 1 of 2 but he is heavily favored.

conservative candidate Francois Fillon and socialist candidate Benoit Hamon have both conceded and, in perhaps a historic first for the parties, are in agreement in calling for their supporters to back Macron. as expected it looks like more or less the entirety of the French political sphere is uniting against Le Pen.

the parallels are striking (inoffensive socially liberal economic centrist vs raging demagogic outsider determined to blow up the system) but also rather superficial, the French political scene is dramatically different from the American one. the most obvious difference being France is a multi-party parliamentary democracy and neither Macron's nor Le Pen's parties have ever won a presidential election, which stands in glaring contrast to Trump gaining support from and assuming control of 1/2 of the political establishment and 40% of the country simply by securing the Republican nomination.

Plus, you know, the person who wins the popular vote actually wins in France.

I feel like this is getting to be some kinda John Oliver Curse. Speaks out against Trump, Trump wins. Speaks out against Brexit, Brexit happens. Speaks out against Le Pen, Le Pen makes it into the run off.

She was gonna make the runoff either way. I'm surprised she was in 2nd tbh. She had a solid lead last I looked.

At this point I fully expect Le Pen to win despite the polls. I'll honestly be surprised if she doesn't.
