from what i remember it has something to do with people in the old west storing contraband in their boots

the most commonly held belief is people keeping flasks in their boots/pants during prohibition, although the behavior can be traced back at least as far as soldiers in the civil war. basically came to be a catchall term for smuggled contraband, and as bootleg movies require smuggling in of a camera and selling of contraband copies, it got called bootlegging, I guess.
