    St. Patrick's Day 2013

First St. Patrick's (or Paddy's...NEVER Patty's) day outside of Ireland ever.

Whats everyone's game plan for the day? Is it a country wide event or is it just in the big Irish cities (NYC, Boston etc)?

I'm eager to hear of what people are doing/ have done in NYC for it.

In Ireland my friends and I generally all meet up before the parade, get our drinks ready (from the stock of the day before, because you can't actually buy alcohol on St. Patrick's day in Ireland), go to the parade and watch how boring it is and get buzzed.

The parade generally ends round 2pm, so my friends and I generally just go home and either sleep off the drink / or / eat. We then all meet up again and hit it pretty hard for the rest of the night. Generally its one of those hit-or-miss nights, where chances are if your not drunk you'll go crazy from all the people who were steadily drinking all day and are now getting sick all around you.

I tried looking up photos of Galway on St. Patrick's Day Night, but I'm afraid that it'd scare people away from Ireland forever.

West coast guy here. We have a small festival in downtown Portland and all of the bars and clubs roll out the Irish theme. It's a pretty fun time and there are lots of happy drunk people wandering the streets by early evening. No parade or anything like that though.

Also, we have a bar called Kells Irish Pub that has been rated the number 1 Irish bar for 11 years in a row by some guy that started a website that rates restaurants and bars. They brag about it all the time and the bar is really a cool place to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, but how far can internet ratings go anyway?

    Edit:
Here's the link to the festival lineup at Kells.

I will miss the celebration this year because we (my wife and I) are having a baby tomorrow. The rest of you Portlanders should meet up and have a good time. Beware the huge cover charges though....

Baton Rouge (college town) here and we have a parade and lots of drinking. Then there are a ton of people bar hopping in the downtown and uptown areas with live music everywhere. In an otherwise lame town, St. Patrick's day is fun as fuck.

There's a Kells in Seattle too Church - in Post Alley iirc.

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated nationwide in the United States, but I think it's more an excuse to drink and pretend you're Irish than actually observing some kind of tradition. So you'll just find a bunch of rowdy Americans drinking green beer and eating corned beef and hash, lol.

One of favorite bars in Utah is Piper Down, which happens to be an Irish Pub. Their lineup looks pretty fun. I have dinner with the family, but might try to stop by afterwords. They get pretty packed on St Patrick's though, it's actually hard to get in. I'll mostly be celebrating the night before at the Young Dubliners concert.

Not really a huge day, just an excuse to go out and get blind drunk at a bar.

There's a pub here called o'malley's that is usually packed to the brim, dunno if ima even hit it up this year

Shore towns the weekends around and before the holiday are filled with people and we have some parades. It's almost a month-long event every weekend. That, and corned beef & cabbage. The holiday is pretty much over by this point though for us.

Yeah nothing really goes down here, just bars fill up with drunks wearing bits of green lol.
teh beef & cabbage is decent, a friends family usually makes it every year to celebrate and turns out delicious~

Since you're Irish, does the fact that my birthday is on the 17th infuriate you?

    Spoiler: show
Not even a drop of Irish either.
    Spoiler: show
I still love corned beef and cabbage though.

    racist post inc:

why do asians hate corned beef? Are there any out here to prove that wrong? I have yet to meet one (seems like 95% of my friends in Cali are some form of asian) and I always make my husband salmon on St. Patty's day since he doesn't like it.

I don't much care for Corned Beef either unless it's hashed.

Not even the slightest, Japanese grandmother made that for me every birthday.

    Spoiler: show
Maybe it's time to sit your friends down and ask why they hate good food.

Unless you count watching someone else have a Guinness or two, I have never done anything for St. Patrick's day as an adult. That might be because I don't drink and my friends really don't either.
