The bombshell news of this morning is obviously Bethesda’s announcement that Obsidian Entertainment is making the next Fallout game, Fallout New Vegas.
Back in March, I sat down with the CEO of Obsidian entertainment, Feargus Urquhart. Obviously we didn't talk about Fallout New Vegas, but we did speak about the developer's relationship with Fallout fans. While Urquhart was with Black Isle studios, he worked on both Fallout and Fallout 2, so his relationship with the series’s sometimes-obsessive fans goes way back. After I commented that many of G4tv.com’s readers are negative (sorry, guys, but some of you are), Urquhart replied with the following:
“Hey, I’ve dealt with Fallout fans for years and they’re the worst! They are the most into-it fan-group. I was talking to the guys at Bethesda and others in the industry and trying to figure out who is the worst fan-group, and it’s Fallout fans. They’re horrible. But they care. It’s a double-edged sword. I love them and hate them at the same time. I love that that they care so much, but the way they express their love…”
Urquhart and I also talked about the advantages and disadvantages to working on an entirely new property like Alpha Protocol versus making a game based on an already established universe like, say, Fallout.
“Original property is great because you have ultimate freedom. And it’s horrible because you have ultimate freedom. There’s no box," Urquhart said. "You have to come up with that source book. But when it comes down to say, D&D, you can say, “Okay, here’s the Forgotten Realms book. What does it say about Baldur’s Gate? No, it doesn’t say it’s an oasis city in the middle of the desert.”
