    HTC One or Galaxy S4

Time to upgrade my phone, which one of these would be the best use of my resources with the following in mind:

-No Apple. Not even an option, don't mention iPhone!
-I don't care about the camera.
-I want it to look cool, both the phone itself and the UI.
-I want the experience to be fluid; no jerky menus, quick and clean animations and transitions between screens/apps.
-The phone should be capable of running any app available on the market at the moment fluidly, or at least as best as it can.

I already know I get 16GB extra storage with the HTC One at the $199.99 price point, so that's a point in the HTC's court for me already, albeit not a huge one.

I've never done a phone that wasn't a piece of shit before (my current is an XPeria Play so, I'm pretty sure anything would be an upgrade at this point) so I'm in the dark about this stuff.

    Opinions?

I haven't tried the HTC ONE, so I can't say much about that one.
I personally use the S4 and I am fairly happy with it.
I don't see it as looking cool though, it's very "clean" looking for lack of a better term, of course you can accessorize them both to high heavens. Personally I changed the back cover to the induction model, so I can charge it wirelessly with a dock. It's a little thicker that way, but oh so practical at the office. You can tinker with the userinterface of both of them, installing mods and whatnot if that's your cup of tea, They're both fast and with loads of functions, and from what I can remember, both loved by reviewers. You can only go right here really.

I had a HTC One X, the predecessor to the HTC One. It was a good phone. I just upgraded to a Sony Xperia Z Ultra. That's an amazing phone (apparently so is the Z1). The hardware in the two phones you're looking at are identical. So it more comes down to interface and antenna quality. With UI it's personal preference. Both manufacturers use their own UI. Some love HTC Sense while others hate it. Same with Touchwiz from Samsung. Some love it, some hate it. Both look and run well so it's again down to your personal preference. App support of two mainstream models is a non issue in general. I personally hate touchwiz which is why I owned a HTC for the last 3 years.

Own neither of these phones but did research regarding differences between them a few months prior (Before verizon offered HTC).

HTC one looks far better, has better sound. Tho I think samsung wins in mostly everything else. The 4S is a little newer, so it also has that factor I guess. I have a S3, I have played with HTC ones and they work great, as good as my S3. I might consider getting HTC next time if it was not for the fact that I want the LG g2. Thing looks like a beast, and once roms start to flow out for it I can get rid of LGs crap overlay.

but my vote goes to the HTC One out of the two

What the HTC has going is that it feels sturdy and can take decent damage, unlike the S4 which feels a little delicate. Nothing a good case can't remedy tho. Otherwise, hands down the S4. The screen is bright, beautiful, and responsive. Beautiful phone.

I have the HTC One X and battery life is a real issue. There's also random phantom drain that happens where it goes from 60%->0 with no real reason. The One may have fixed that, but next phone I get I'm likely going to try an S4.

I just bought an HTC One and took me less than a half hour to put another ROM on it, so if you don't like Sense UI you can get rid of it very easily. Thing feels very solid, drawbacks as I see them are non-removable battery and no expandable storage, but then again 32GB is more than enough in my situation.

If sound means anything to you the front facing speakers on the htc one are godlike

Thanks for all the replies. Looking to go with the HTC One at this stage then since it seems to suit my uses a bit better.

By this holiday the htc will be a year old so make sure there isn't a new version of it on the horizon

    LG G2

    - Better specs, the best sans the Note 3 in fact
    - Best reviewed screen
    - Best reviewed battery life
    - Cheaper in some instances
    - If you like ROMs, this is the Nexus 5 base. This means that it's essentially a Nexus 5 with better battery life.

I hope you haven't already made your decision.

If you don't care about specs go with the HTC One mini. That phone's the perfect size. I don't understand the whole big phone thing and then there's also phablets... ugh.

going tomorrow so not yet! effectively the G2 is an HQ One then? what about the Note 3, would that be the end-all-be-all choice, or would the G2 be a better decision based on the screen, battery life, etc.? Really the sound solution on the One was attractive, though I guess I could remedy that by buying a pair of speakers or something.

I've had the LG G2 for about two weeks and love it. You get used to the buttons on the back in a few days and don't even notice it anymore. Snapdragon 800 quadcore is fast as hell and battery is great too. Doesn't have expandable storage and is a sealed phone but looks and feels good imo. Definitely check it out.

Thanks much for pointing it out Tymon and BorkBorkBork! I'll have to have them in my hand and see how they feel in the store before I make an absolute choice. Biggest downside to the G2 seems to be finding one in stock lol, seems none of the AT&T stores near me has one available at the moment, not that I mind waiting.

No one's mentioned the ridiculously superior speakers on the HTC One compared to any other phone on the market (G2 included). The S4 also felt like a cheap piece of plastic compared to the awesome build quality of the One. The HTC One is also on Android 4.3, the S4 is on 4.2 (I think? Or is it still on 4.1 in the US?).

I had an S4 for three days before swapping for an HTC One. I have zero regrets. The G2 is a nice phone but it physically looks lame and LG's android skin kind of blows compared to Sense 5 and TouchWiz.

I'd wait a week or two after the Nexus 5 is announced to see if it's any better ;o
