Looking to grab something this season to replace my iPad HD or 3 or whatever it's called which has become a glorified powerpoint viewer and nothing else.

With the Holidays approaching, the black Friday and cyber Monday deals, it's time to buy, but everyone is making tablets nowadays.

The options are simple if you're an apple fan boy, want windows 8, a keyboard, or to just read a book.

My iPad was originally going to be used to save money on text books which it never did. I put books on it, but hate reading them on it. It's too bright, heavy, bad battery life, etc. I prefer the paperback. I tried using it for notes, and it was great, but handwriting to paper gives me better study habits. I literally only use it to follow along with my professor's powerpoints easier.

I started working nights again, so I need something to do at work. This is #1. WiFi isn't always available. I was going to just bring my books, but thought a Kindle might be a better choice. This is probably the best option for me to get, the problem here is the 50 different models. There's the basic, the white, then there is the option of the kindle fire and HDs and whatnot. I don't really know the best route here. The windows 8 tablets look cool too, and website reviews all swear by the iPad air which is just bullshit. It would be nice to have something for schoolwork too, but the iPad now gets zero use.

With the sales, I'm not sure which way to go. All I know is I wanna get my current iPad on eBay asap.

Haven't looked into them too much as my first focus was a Kindle since the most useful thing to use without wifi would be that, but I don't even know which Kindle would be best. Then I started looking at the kindle tablets, then all tablets, then everything lol.

I already have a laptop, an 11inch I got on cybermonday years ago. It's an alienware I got for a steal and doesn't ever need replacing since it's got great battery for most shit and can even handle BF3.

I'm going to sell it and get something better and/more friendly. Was looking to get just a Kindle for books, but with all the sales and options, maybe a better kindle tablet or other brand may be better for me.

Brightness settings. If you're looking for lightweight, the Nexus 7 is nice although some people don't like Android. There's also the iPad Mini 2. I'd say go mess around with them at a Best Buy or whatever.

Maybe look at a baytrail win8/8.1 tablet with a digitizer. This will let you use a stylus with it much more naturally, and being x86 will not limit you to apps.

MS OneNote is actually pretty awesome for note taking and free I think. Cousin of mine uses it at her high school in combination with a school-laptop that has a digitizer (can swivel the screen around to write on it). She does all her math homework and such on it. Was pretty impressed with it and the volume of notes she's amassed, all neatly organized (almost 4 years worth). Integrated msn account keeps it backed up on skydrive as well, letting you open/view in a browser. I suppose that could also be an option: look for a laptop with a digitizer screen if you're not completely wanting another tablet. There's plenty of old ones on ebay, though don't expect anything stellar out of them.

Honestly, I still don't see the point in a giant smart phone after playing with them for a while unless you remote to another machine with them (main use my brother finds for his). Then you're just using it as a portable terminal, which isn't too bad if you didn't pay much for it or got it free from your company heh. I'd rather be able to actually write with some precision on a tablet (digitizer) and use full software. I could see a fair use for an ebook as those screens are much more pleasing to read for longer (eink), but even with pdfs for my textbooks, it's cumbersome (I like to write small notes in the margins, use page markers, etc). The baytrail tablets with digitizers are getting closer to this though. If you really have a tech itch you need to scratch, see if you can demo one at a store somewhere. Just demo everything you can; maybe you'll figure out what you want better.

Brightness settings gee wish I thought of that.................. doesn't matter how dim you make the screen, reading a book on an iPad is so unbelievably inferior not to mention it sucks the battery down like icing at fat camp.

T-mobile gives you 200MB for free each month now on tablets. 200MB is not a whole lot, but if you're not streaming video/music it may be enough to get by in between wifi hotspots.

I would say if you're still interested in doing the stuff you originally intended for your ipad to see if the kindle paperwhite or nook glowlight will work. I think for both sets of tablets once they transition to readers you lose the capability of any kind of apps or web-browsing, but they'd fix all the gripes you had with the ipad in terms of weight, battery life and especially readability/eye irritation.

Yeah a lot of signs are pointing to the Paperwhite now, with the exception of a couple of tablets. Being so cheap, the Paperwhite is probably the best bet, this way I can spend money on stuff like a 3DS.

It really is bothersome to see iPad Air rank #1 on "reviews" though.

We have a kindle fire which we enjoy. Only "issue" is my wife is a book snob and can't get comfortable reading with it since she prefers the weight and feel of a hardbound book........... As far as screen and use though she loves it. She uses netflix a lot on it when she's laying in bed sick.

Yea, it looked really good. I haven't read a book on it in a while but it was really clear. I have shitty eyes without my glasses and I was able to still read it fine.

Love it. Not sure of the weight in comparison to your Ipad, but it's got some great resolution, upgradeable storage, and very few bugs/crashes. I love it.
